4 out of 5 stars Nice Device, Not Sure About XM.   August 16, 2007

As far as I can tell, This is a very good basic receiver for XM. Good sound, fairly easy to operate. Adaptable to home, car and portable use, though I only use it in my car. Has some nice features such as the presets options, background color options, etc. It doesn't have any of the higher cost features such as recording broadcasts or playing MP3, but I didn't want those anyway. You will face all the issues associated with installing any of the satellite receivers in your car or home, the biggest challenge being where to put the antenna and how to get the antenna lead to the receiver, which is a major hassle if you don't opt for professional installation. And even then you're getting a very primitive setup.
My biggest problem is with the XM concept and service. Don't believe anyting you hear about XM being commercial free. All the "Talk Show" broadcasts I listen to are satellite broadcasts of commercailly aired programs, so you get all the usual commercial breaks from those programs and XM fills in the station commercial time with their own commercials. On the music channels you hear long periods of commercials for other XM channels. Think about it for a moment. If your main music channels are "50's", "60's", etc, just how interested do they think you're going to be in what's happening on the RAP/Hip-Hop Channel? But you're going to hear about it. And the DJ's can't shutup either. XM should know you can't give a DJ a microphone and expect him to just play the music. They jump in and interrupt the begining and ending of songs, just like on commercial radio.
And you can count on loosing reception every once in a while, like when you drive under the awning at the bank ATM, Burger King, or you're in line for pharmacy pick-up on the north side of a bldg.
I don't know about Sirius, but XM has taken what could have been a revolution in entertainment and turned it into a subscription fee re-hash of the same old thing. However, I can see it being very enjoyable for folks who travel a lot, like truckers, service tech's. It will allow you to listen to the same channel(s) on your drive from LA to Boston or Galveston to Green Bay.

4 out of 5 stars Very Nice   August 10, 2007

This is my second Roady and I like this one much more. It is very compact and very easy to use. The display is large and easy to read. I've read other reviews talking about attaching their FM antennas to this, but for me, I just tuned my radio to one of the FM frequencies and it worked right off the bat. I commute regularly from PA - NY and I don't have to change the frequency at all. I actually have an aux. input on my radio that I used to share with my old XM radio and my MP3 player. Now I can devote that input just to the MP3 player. XM radio sounds MUCH better using the built-in FM transmitter then the way I used to have it. I had an engine whine noise all the time before and I couldn't really play my stereo loud. I am rediscovering XM!

Now with the wires, ooh yeah, they can be an eyesore. I ran the antenna wire behind the dash, up the A-pillar made a short run from the sun visor to the moonroof and stuck it just behind the glass of the moonroof. The power wire I just ran it behind the dash and behind my "ashtray" where the power outlet is. Still not neat since I have to open the ashtray to plug the power cord in every time I get in my car. Not a big deal, but if you hate seeing wires it might be worth paying for a pro-install. As for the unit itself, I used the dash mount only because I did not want to block my vents (they move). The mount sticks on and holds on amazingly well. It has yet to fail and I have had this unit for a good year now, taking the unit in and out of the cradle/mount.

All in all, I'm glad I got it. The one thing I wish it did have was a remote control. And a remote control that would be easy to maneuver through all the choices available.

4 out of 5 stars Inexpensive XM satellite radio   August 2, 2007

New user to XM and this is my first XM radio. So far it's worked flawlessly. The unit is very easy to use, small, and has plenty of presets. Big screen that lets you modify the display to your liking.

My only grievance with the unit is the mounting hardware. It comes with two types of mounts and neither work for my car. The mount that lets you attach it to your air vents (A/C vents) is too short so the clip never gets around the fins/blades. The other method is to use the stand and that only lets you mount it horizontally. I need something that lets me mount it like a bobblehead. This is not necessarily a strike against the radio. Mounting is just a miss for my car.

Signal comes in strong so far everywhere I've traveled. I was a bit disappointed that not all the stations are commercial free. Luckily whenever a commercial comes on I can just tune into another station. XM doesn't seem to synchronize all their stations to have commercials at the same time. Otherwise I'm very please with the XM service.

Pros :
Small
Intuitive design
Inexpensive
Multiple presets
Nice display

Cons :
Mounting hardware may not work for your application
Sometimes the preset buttons are unresponsive. Doesn't happen that often.
XM doesn't offer commercial free listening. Not a strike against the radio but the service.

4 out of 5 stars Continuous music.   June 26, 2007

This is a great product, once you get used to having to find a new FM frequency in almost every major metropolitan area. My vehicle does not have a cassette slot, only a CD slot (single play), so this required attaching an extra wire to my FM antenna, so that I could receive the signal through my FM radio. Once tuned, it is outstanding, and after you've done it a couple of times, you can switch frequencies quickly.

5 out of 5 stars Fast easy way to get XM satellite radio ......   June 18, 2007

I have factory XM in my other car and enjoy it on long drives. So I wanted to put a unit in my 2002 Subaru WRX. This radio looked like it fit the bill; small and not too expensive. It is a very compact unit, about the size of a deck of cards and 1/4" thick. I usually have poor luck using universal fittings but I was able to use the vent mount which worked just fine and puts the unit at just the right height. I put the magnetic antenna on the roof above the windshield and carefully inserted the wire under the weather stripping, inside the door, and under the dash to the cradle on the vent. I spent a bit of time also hiding the cigarette mount power cord, and the cassette adaptor wires, so it looks like a pretty clean installation. After activating I get a full signal and good clean sound. I'd recommend this unit without hesitation. Just take your time to install it correctly.
