3 out of 5 stars Some road info has been outdated for 3 years   June 15, 2008

Although it has the "ability" to display its current track on a nearby road while it is actually on a different road, there are still chances to let people find out that some road information such as roads have been moved or redesigned interstate junctions are outdated. I already noticed a couple of these kind of problems. Yet there is no map update available.
Therefore, I still print maps from online map service like I used to do just in case.

Ok I had a 4050 which doing an update from the website messed it up, they replaced it with a 4250 which proceeded to stop picking up signals, sent it for repair they scratched the LCD, they decided to replace it with a REFURBISED unit Oh yeah all of this happens in a 5 month period

4 out of 5 stars Voice command useless to me   June 11, 2008
I bought the Magellan Roadmate 3000T after using "Hertz Never Lost" in a car rental about three years ago. I travel across the U.S. for work, so needless to say, I was instantly hooked. After using it over two years I sold it on Ebay and bought this model. I believe the most signifigant operational improvement is the live traffic re-routing feature. I got a year subscription free when I bought the unit. Other than that this unit is nearly the same GPS as the less expensive model.

On the plus side, the extra "bells and whistles" are nice! The larger screen is great. Also, the light sensor that changes the on screen background from green to black at night is almost worth the cost alone, in the safety it provides. This feature nearly eliminates the annoying and potentially dangerous dots in my field of vision from stealing glimpses at the screen at night. The Points of interest feature has also proved to be an invaluable timesaver. It even saves gas, as I don't have to drive around a strage area loooking for food, gas, etc.

All in all, I am happy with the unit. My constructive criticism would be for the designers to implement a better use for the voice command function...it's virtually useless in its current application. I do like having it as a gadget I can show off to friends that are nterested in electronics.
I also do not like the delay in re-routing on this unit compared to the 3000T. I suppose the traffic feature is to blame for this, but it is a small price to pay for getting the benefit of avoiding traffic. Other than these small annoyances, I would reccommend this unit to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not perfect   June 10, 2008
I bought the Maestro 4250 in early April because I had several scheduled road trips and got tired of playing with paper maps. For the most part it works as advertised and and I'm pleased with it overall but it does have some quirks.

Others have alreday reviewed teh major pros/cons of this unit and my expericence with it matches the majority here with problems turning the unit on and some odd routing that isn't as short/fast as it should have been.

The text-to-speech feature needs some common sense tweaking. Others have already mentioned the issue with "Dr" being announced as "Doctor" instead of "Drive" but sometimes it recognizes other common abreviations and other times it doesn't. For example, I live just outside of Boston and travel on MA Rt. 2 daily. In some places Rt. 2 is known as the "Concord Turnpike" which the unit corectly announces. In other places Rt. 2 is known as the "Cambridge Turnpike". The maps list this as the "Cambridge Tpke" and the unit will announce it as "Cambridge Tee-Pee-Kay-Eee". On other Turnpikes I've also had it announce the abreviation as "Tipika". It has a similar probem with the "St" abreviation. If it is in the map as "St." (with a period) the unit will announce it as "Street". If there is no period (i.e. "St") it will announces it as "Ess-Tee".

On one trip from Boston to Lewes DE, I took I-84 west through CT and when I crossed into NY the exit ramp led to I-684 which you can take South to either New York or North to Pawling. The exit description comes up on the Maestro as "New York C/Pa" and the unit announces it as "Exit #xx; New York Ka-pow". :p

It also has issues with exit numbers where there are "A" and "B" exits. It will properly announce Exit 27 as "Exit Twenty-Seven" but Exit 27A will be announced as "Exit Two Seven Ah" and Exit 27B will be annound as "Exit Two Seven Bee". Apparently the A/B designation throws the unit off and it defaults to a strict "announce-it-one-digit/letter-at-a-time" mode.

One final nit - one feature that I would really like to have seen on this thing is the ability to tell it that I'm driving a commercial vehicle and be able to tell it my vehicle weight and then have it figure comercial vehicle exclusions when it calculates my routes. This should be a basic feature for any automotive GPS but few seem to have it. If you plan on buying one you'll need to exclude any road with commercial vehicle exclusions yourself.

4 out of 5 stars Magellan 4250 Maestro   June 9, 2008
The Magellan works great. I love the accuracy and the long battery life when it is not plugged in. I had a problem with the first one I received; it would not talk after a few weeks. I called Magellan and they sent me a new one no charge. My only complaint is that it is picky about the spelling of locations. If you misspell the word it will not find it.
