my navigon 2100 was working fine for 3 days an then all of a sudden it died on me and i had to reset it to get it back on in the middle of getting directions. it came on few minutes later but it did it again two days later and then i did same to get it back on. but then it started doing the same very frequently and today it just went dead on me and i still have not been able to reset it. it is frustrating. I would say be careful buying this product from this seller. thank you

4 out of 5 stars Great GPS. Absolutely loved it.   May 19, 2008

The Navigon 2100 is my first GPS. I used it recently for a trip to Pennsylvania and New York and it was worth every penny. The text-to-speech feature works beautifully. Although some street names weren't pronounced right, they were good enough to be understood. And the voice prompts came two times: first, well before you need to take the exit; second, about 200 yards before the exit, it'd say "NOW, take the exit right to ....". I was amazed how it told me to take the exit, or to make a turn "NOW" right before I reached an exit or a turn. I am not sure if this GPS is especially good at this or other GPS with text-to-speech are also this good, but I sure do like it a lot. The voice was loud enough. I never had to use it at max volume, even with music playing in the background at a reasonable volume.

Calculation of routes was pretty fast, as was rerouting whenever I missed a turn. I can't comment on whether the routes it took me on were the best, because I was driving in an unfamiliar area, but I know that it did give good directions in New York city, which I know quite well. Sometimes it asked me to make a turn into a street that didn't quite look like it was used very much (this was in rural pennsylvania), and I avoided it. Besides the occasional recommendation of a U-turn (which can be turned off by the way from your settings) which annoyed me, the directions, the maps were all great and up-to-date in my opinion.

The display was pretty good, although I did wish at times when the sunlight fell on it that it were a bit brighter. But for 98% of the time, the brightness was good enough.

The best part was that it showed the road signs at critical points on the highway where you had to stay left or right, to go towards a particular city (which Navigon, I think, calls "reality view"). They were always placed at the correct location and the information about which lanes to take was always accurate. The sign would come up as a static image about 0.5 miles or so before the point on the highway where the actual signs were placed and would disappear right after you cross that point. Very cool indeed! My only complain about this feature is that I wish they would shift the sign a bit to the left or zoom out a bit when one is supposed to continue on one of the right lanes. The box showing speed, altitude, time of arrival etc. would block the right lanes, making it a bit hard to see while the left lanes which I was not supposed to take filled more than half the screen...I found this a bit annoying. But again, there's a sign on the left that also shows whether to stay left or right, so it's not a very serious problem. I'd guess the wider screen versions would not suffer from this problem.

The speed indicator was often off by 2 to 3 mph compared to the speedometer in my car- this was more noticeable at higher speeds (>70 mph). But it's possible the speedometer in my car was a bit off, too.

This is overall a great GPS, especially considering the price. It doesn't have many bells and whistles (except the reality view feature which only Navigon has, as far as I know) but it has everything you want in a GPS. It will take you places, it will tell you to make turns at the right places, it will show you road signs ahead of time, you can add multiple waypoints, and the map seems accurate. What else do you expect from a GPS?

5 out of 5 stars Navigon rocks after updating it with the new software version 1.2   May 14, 2008

I had to write this review to alert other Navigon 2100 (5100) users in case they are not aware of this. If you have purchased 2100 or 5100 recently, it has perhaps v1.1 installed. Please register with Navigon and download the latest software which is v1.2. I Purchased the 2100 a few months back and loved the maps and the reality views but was disappointed with the interface and software had some bugs. I was recently alerted by Navigon that a newer version of the software which also included map updates was available (which is awsome as compare to other GPS makers which normally don't offer free map updates). After I upgraded the device with v1.2, I am very pleased with this GPS. The device locks on the GPS signal even when i am sitting inside my house. It also acquires the signal fairly quickly under normal conditions and is great in the city driving with tall building (as in NYC) and will not lose the signal (this was even before the upgrade). I have to say that after upgrading to v1.2, all my complaints are gone. I haven't noticed any issues thus far yet. One caveat is that downloading the 1.5 GB file will take a very long time and will remind you of the days when dial-up was the king. This is perhaps due to limited bandwidth issues with Navigon servers. Use Windows XP to download this large file as IE in Vista kept on crashing in my experience. Those who are looking to buy Garmin and other top brand names GPS, should seriously consider Navigon.

2 out of 5 stars not worth it's cost   May 9, 2008

Maps are outdated, hard to get support on the phone. Support on line is ok to above averaqge.
The unit is hard to read (small fonts for eta, etc ) and hard to program (limited choices). I own 4 different units and would rate this as the last one to choose.

I tested all of them and this unit has an "interesting" way of directing you to your location. From were I live to downtown (fastest, shortest, etc) would take you through roads that are way out of the way.
Sorry
