Technology does not get better than this June 28, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am happy to agree with the other positive reviews. This thing works! Hooked up to my new Thinkpad, it is a rocket with only one paper jam due to 2 pages stapled together (my bad) and 2 pages that simply refused to scan as 2.
Clearing paper jams is a snap and the software is intuitive without being annoying. Everything should work this well. I am going to buy a second one for my home. It does not replace a scanner for photographs, but for documents, bills, receipts, etc, it is perfect. It corrects skewed feeds and it almost always auto-rotates correctly - even when one sheet is vertical with the following sheet horizontal.
And one can set it for duplex (auto 2 sided scanning) or one sided simplex. When set to the former, it can be set to auto delete a blank page. When a multi-page scan has one sided and two sided pages mixed in - no problem - blank pages deleted.
All in all, a pleasure to use - well worth the price.
Almost Great June 27, 2008 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
A fast document scanner like this one can be a huge help in organizing your life. Six months ago, the S510 was about the only game in town for a reasonable price. Now, there may be better options, especially for rather heavy-duty users like me. The pluses have been well-written about, so I'll give only the minuses:
1) No Grey Scale! B/W is fine for pure text and some graphics, but is horrible with photos. In a publication with b/w photos, one is stuck with either copying in full color which results in large files, or manually switching between color mode and B/W mode since "Auto-Color Detect" senses color, not the presence of photos.
2) The paper input tray has fences that are too short. Pages tend to torque left as they feed. The paper output tray has no fences at all, which often means that the output pages get shifted around or kicked off onto the floor. The "De-skew" option can get confused if there is graphics on the page or if the printing is stylized.
3) The color scans are too light and there is no way to adjust the setting.
4) Japan has lousy paper. As a result, this scanner has a hard time with good quality paper as it's too thick.
5) Oft-used scan options are buried in strangely organized menus.
6) Inadequate cooling. A few cooling holes in the base along with rubber feet would fix the problem, but as it is, there is no airflow through the unit.
7) Life limit of 150,000 - 200,000 pages, possibly due to the bad cooling. There are now quite a few pixels missing from the scans; it's still okay for text, but irritating for illustrations.
It's doing the job, but I'd shop around were I looking for the same type of scanner today.
Best Scanner Ever June 21, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I found this on Amazon during a search to replace my old scanner. I have had it two weeks and let me just say this scanner is amazing and you should buy one immediatly. I had over 2000 photos that had been in storage and I would scan a few now and then. When I got the new ScanSnap I scanned over 2000 photos in about 2 hours with no problem whatsoever. It took me a while to get used to the menus, but once I did, it is a breeze. I have a collection of business cards from over 30 years. I scanned them in less than 20 min. I have never been more excited about a product in my life. Plus it comes bundled with Adobe Acrobat. BUY IT YOU WON'T REGRET IT! I read all the reviews on this page and I have nothing negative to say about scanning photos, no problems with jamming, very small footprint. It just works, that plain and simple.
great scanner! June 21, 2008 This scanner performs exactly as advertised - staples, various thicknesses of paper, many pages are all ok. I am a moron at technology, but setting it up was super-easy and done in 10 minutes. Very pleased.
Small, logical...at the front of the pack June 18, 2008 I was not sure what to expect.
It does exactly what it says, sort of rare these days. It also does it exceptionally well.
If you need a great scanner that can do 1 or 2 sides, moves quickly and has an easy, up front interface look no further. You have arrived. Is it a bit pricey? I suppose, but you truly do get what you pay for. I paid for quality and that is what I got.
You will be 100% satisfied.
