The most useful black plastic typewriter-looking thing in my office June 5, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I just got this a few days ago, so this isn't a comprehensive review. All I can say at this point is that I've been waiting for years for something like this to come along.
I'm a small-business owner with 7 years of client files which I'm frequently required to dig through, and it's no fun. It would be nice if I could do a keyword search and quickly find the one file I'm looking for. And since I also split my work time between home and the office, having a second set of files would be very helpful.
Suffice it to say, the Scansnap seems to have been designed for exactly these purposes. The software installed easily (I usually get nervous when a package includes more than one disc, but no problems here), and I was up and running in no time. The OCR works well (and quickly), and seems to recognize text in most common fonts. And it's a nice touch that it creates reasonably-sized PDFs; a 12-page searchable PDF consisting of mostly text weighs in at a svelte 550KB. Not bad!
There are some annoyances, of course. It usually gets hung up when you feed it a stack of pages that aren't all the same size. It mangled a few sheets of tissue-like triplicate paper. Converting a PDF to make it searchable is time-consuming, but at least you can set it to convert a batch of files that you've already scanned in, then go get a sandwich or something. The ScanSnap organizer program is decent, but a bit simplistic. I'm already finding little things that it doesn't do, but I wish it did. They are LITTLE things, though.
In short, you probably already know if you need something like this. If you do, it's a darn good way to go.
Outstanding Scanner! May 30, 2008 This scanner is outstanding! My staff (small office) LOVES it, and are anxious to scan things. The imaging is fast, and the interface with the computer is terrific. Just put in your documents, punch the scan button, and then on-screen, tell it where you want to save the image(s). Done! We had tried to use an old, single-page flat-bed, and it was so tedious, that I had a hard time getting anyone to scan things for me. Not now! A very good buy!
Finally a great scanner May 30, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is my 4th purchase! I love this scanner that I purchased one for my personal use at home. I normally buy these for work, but after using it for a few months I realized that this is a great tool for home too. It is easy to use and set up, and there is no hastle in saving files etc. Just set the thing up; then just load the paper and press one button. Actually I am buying a 5th one today. Oh, I forgot, Amazon has never let me down. When I buy on line, the first place I look is Amazon, because I always get my product on time and no hastles. Great job Amazon.

Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Scanner May 29, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I really like this scanner for its ease of use, its speed and its compact size. It came with quick start instructions and was easy to setup in less than an hour from the time I opened the box. A 6' USB cord was included and that was just long enough for my desk layout but some people might want a slightly longer cord. The scan function is easily accessed with a one touch button on the scanner or by right clicking on the tray icon on the screen. The sheet feeder works well although twice it grabbed the first two pages simultaneously when scanning a group of 6 - 15 pages that were thin legal pad paper and had been previously folded. As a test, I tried the same group of papers with the sheet feeder on my HP LaserJet 3015 and the LaserJet had no problem. The scanner easily handled post it notes taped to pages and torn corners on pages without jamming. It was wonderfully simple to unjam when I left a staple in one of the papers I was scanning. I pulled an easily visible silver lever on the front of the scanner and removed the paper. The scanner came with Adobe Acrobat Standard which makes it easy to combine PDF files or change the order of the pages scanned. However, this scanner is so fast that I find it easier to simply put the pages in the correct order and rescan them. The quality of the scanned images looks fine to me. Pencil notes written out in the field on yellow legal paper are legible. I haven't used the OCR or Organizer functions that come with the scanner. Overall, I am really pleased with the performance of this scanner.
It's a snap! May 25, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This scanner really is fantastic. I have owned it for a month, and I am using it to scan old records so that I can be pretty much paperless. I especially like its ability to scan both sides of a document at the same time and in color. This scanner was "a snap" to set up, and the software is very simple. I recommend it. Worth the price.
