Epson makes a terrible product, baits you with a cheap printer... September 2, 2008 ...And makes you spend 3 times that on ink cartridges within the first year of ownership. I bought this printer super cheap as part of a promotion and if I go even a couple of days without using it, I need to "check nozzles" (which uses up ink) and then "clean nozzles" which uses even MORE ink.
It refuses to even let you try to print a page if it determines the ink is low but there is always ink left in the cartridges when I remove them. What a waste! And don't even THINK of trying to use a generic ink.
After speaking with a customer service rep who barely understood me, Epson promised to deliver 4 brand new cartridges to me and if I still had problems I should call them back. We'll see.
Wish I had seen this before I bought the piece of garbage: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epson_ink_cartridge_controversy
Worst printer I've ever used August 20, 2008 I've trusted Epson due to other types of products of theirs that I have used, but this printer is the worst printer I've ever used. The software that comes with it is clunky and limited, although it scans decent enough. As for printing, yes you can choose "black ink only" BUT (and it says this in the manual and on the product's FAQ) it STILL uses small amounts of color ink when using black only! So if all you use this printer for is printing text documents, you STILL need to buy color ink AND you will run out! Even worse, when you run out you CANNOT print. At all. So you can replace black ink all you want, and use it up, but no matter what you have to keep the color ink in stock. It runs out extremely fast too. Don't get fooled by the cheap price or the cheap price of the ink... you will end up spending more on ink just because of how often you'll have to buy it. Stay away.
Second one works great! August 18, 2008 The first Epson Stylus CX7400 we received would not recognize that the Magenta cartridge was installed. We emailed Epson and tried all the things (4 emails back and forth) they suggested and it still wouldn't recognize it.
We returned the printer to Amazon for a replacement. When we received the replacement Epson CX7400, we followed the same installation instructions as before and everything worked great. We're now happy with the printer. I do thing Epson may want to do more QC on their printers, but that's not against Amazon.
Headed for the recycling heap August 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This printer was thrown into the deal when I bought a new pc from a major retailer. It reminds me now of the simple truths of "no such thing as a free lunch," or "you get what you pay for." The printer when it was new out of the box printed decently, although it sounded like an old Yugo trying to shift gears. My problems started when I started getting messages that the ink was low. Those messages came much too early in my opinion, as this printer is used lightly for personal use, and is never used to print large quantities of documents. I have been replacing cartridges far too often, and they are expensive. Like some other reviewers, I was surprised that I cannot print black only when any of the three color cartridges are out of ink. I just bought replacement color cartridges (again) only to find out that the black cartridge would not print even though it was showing about 1/3 ink remaining. I went through all of the clean nozzle steps, diagnostics, etc., and finally got a message that the black ink was now out. I am fed up with this printer. I have used HP printers in the past, with decent success. I will not buy an Epson, or accept one for "free." This Epson printer seems to be designed to sell ink cartridges. Buyer beware. To the recycling center this printer will go, or maybe I will use it as a boat anchor. Too big for a door stop.
Disappointment August 14, 2008 I am very disappointed with my Epson CX7400 printer.I don't believe the image quality is any better than the HP printers I've had--the sharpness and color intensity are certainly not better. As other reviewers noted, one cannot print black text, even if the black cartridge is new, as long as any other cartridge is expended. Unfortunately, mine came as part of a package when I purchased a new computer and I had given away my HP before I discovered Epson's shortcomings. Technical "help" was also frustrating--no answers will be given about questions before personal information is shared. I almost felt as if I were being "blacklisted". I don't think I can in good conscience sell this printer so I will be saving for a different kind.
