 Excellent upconvert DVD and MP4 player May 30, 2008

I use it mainly for playing Divx and Xvid MP4 video files. The USB interface allows me to play from my USB drive or a portable hard drive, without having to burn the files on a DVD or CD. That is a bless!!!! The srt and sub subtitles can be turn on and off. The picture quality is excellent, matching the quality of playing on a laptop. Currently, the player plays Divx and Xvid, but not H.264. I am expecting the next generation will add support for H.264 codec.
I only tried once with playing a DVD, the LOTR - return of the king. It is as good as any players out there, if not better. Since I don't have a blue ray, hence cannot compare how good the "upconvert" is. But remember, regular DVD has the 720x480 natively. The high definition is 1080. Therefore, it would be unrealistic to expect this player to match a HD or blue ray player.
Overall, it has been working as expected since it arrived 2 weeks ago. The on-screen menu is the only factor OPPO needs to improve in its next line of product. The menu fonts are ancient(80' style) and menu navigation is not intuitive.

I recieved the DVD player which was supposed to be new, but it arrived and it was very apparent that it was a returned item that has already been used. I have sent the item back for refund and will not buy from this seller again.

I bought one of these for its DVD-A and SACD capability, at which it excels.
So I bought a second, and am impressed with the build quality, etc., of both.
Then I discover that it automatically does pal to ntsc conversion.
Excellant!
And today I find that it can be made to be 'region free'.
Click Setup on the remote.
Enter 9210
A menu comes up
Enter 0 to set 'region free'
Click Setup again to exit.
Voila.
Couldn't be happier, will probably be buying more as gifts for friends.

I purchased this dvd player based on reviews from Sound and Vision magazine and reviews on here.I have to say that I am very happy.
Very nice packaging from Oppo.I really liked the hdmi cable that is included.
A very solid universal player(no blu ray or hd).It does however state that it plays dvd-r/rw on the website and through reviews,but does not say that in the manual.I only have dvd+r/rw discs anyway so not a big deal for me.
The DVD-Audio sounds good even though I only have 2 discs.
Upconversion is excellent to 1080p.I do notice a big change from my
last system.Load time from inserting the disc is less then 10 seconds.
I think this is a great addition in a home theater set up until the price of the Blu-Ray players drop.

I bought this Oppo DV-980H to be a primary multi channel music player and a temporary video player until I go blu ray. The audio reproduction is outstanding and the video quality is very accurate. Absolutely no complaints. This was money well spent.
