5 out of 5 stars Eager to use lots of times   June 20, 2008
For a reluctant driver in unknown territory, my new Garmin 260 will get lots of use. I believe my wife and I will now be able to venture where "no man has gone before."

5 out of 5 stars Less Stress on the Road   June 19, 2008
This is great for navigating road trips. I didn't want one with any extras except for 'Turn by Turn Directions with Spoken Street Names'. (That seemed important to me). I purchased this one after reading reviews here on Amazon. I also purchased the 'Garmin 010-10723-02 Carrying Case For Nuvi', the 'Bracketron UFM-100BL Nav-Mat GPS Friction Dash Pad' (highly recommend this product), and the usb cable for my computer. I was able to download a new map version and different voices and vehicles easily with the usb cable. My husband and I are happy with the directions it gives. We have used it to get to places we have never been, and it would help us get there with relative ease. We have compared the Nuvi's routes with Google Maps, and it can sometimes differ a little or a lot, but that's not a bad thing at all (as long as it gets us there). We love how it re-routes the map if we take a wrong turn whether by mistake or purposely (if we want to go a different way). It's definitely a help and convenient to have.

4 out of 5 stars Very good performance, excellent value   June 18, 2008
Bought this to replace a 3 year old Garmin i3 which bit the dust. Both of us have BT headsets we like so that wasn't needed on the GPS unit and real time traffic is truly not needed in the Baltimore/DC area by us either. Both of us have XM which supplies the same traffic info (usually worthless IMHO) and the traffic, especially in DC, pretty much sucks 24/7. So, we went with Garmin again and only wanted text-to-speech. Reception has been excellent so far - it locks on quickly and we haven't lost a signal with in car use yet. Database is pretty good (although I'll probably upgrade to the new 2009 Navigator info when available). Routing is fast and vastly superior to the older i3. The windshield mount is much improved and the unit hasn't fallen off yet. Friction mount is great. I don't like the fact that you have to plug the car power adapter into the back of the unit rather than the cradle but that's a minor gripe. Battery life on the unit has been great so far - on many trips, I don't even bother plugging it in. They did cheap out by not including a USB cable for syncing, registration, etc. I have several so it wasn't an issue but Garmin truly should have thrown one in (they're what? $0.50 per unit OEM?). Touch screen completely intuitive and practically idiot proof. POI database is good but needs updating (then again, that's par for the course as NavTech only pumps out updates every so often). Garmin has stuck with autoscreen brightness and night mode via time rather than a light sensor. Sometimes, the screen washes out in sunlight or is too bright in low contrast situations. Would like a hard control for volume and AAA discount locations in the POI database but that's it for complaints. It works very well and, for the money, is an EXCELLENT purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Product   June 18, 2008
This product is a life-saver! We have used it on vacation, for house hunting, all kinds of stuff. In fact, the first time we took it out on a test drive, we encountered a gentleman needing medical attention out in the middle of rural SW Georgia and were able to find him a hospital even though we were unfamiliar with the area! It's amazing!

I like the fact that she (the nüvi: Since it has a female voice, we call it "she," her," etc., and she seems to have a little bit of a personality.) gives voice-prompts just at the right moment, right along with text-directions, appealing to both audio and visual learners/thinkers. I like the fact that she's pretty knowledgable about most areas. Rule of thumb: She knows her way around Atlanta and major cities and most rural areas, but her flaws become visible when it comes to finding recent developments. This is an issue that needs to be addressed by whomever makes updates the maps, not the nüvi, herself, since she can only give info based on the maps preloaded and updated on her system. I've even downloaded the 2009 City Navigator North America NT, and she is still unfamiliar with newer subdivisions and developments and some older places off some beaten paths. Sometimes she surprises you by finding out-of-the-way places you wouldn't expect her to find. However, none of this severely detracts from the overall usefulness and fun provided by the nüvi 260. You can even download extras from the Garmin website: vehicle icons, map updates, points of interest, etc., which help customize and personalize the device. I highly recommend this product to anyone. In fact, I have recommended it to just about everyone in my family, even the technologically illiterate people, because it has a very simple, intuitive interface (when you need to find or use a feature on the device, just touch whatever button or follow whatever series of buttons that seems to make the most sense, because that's most likely what you're supposed to do anyway), and the setup and features are things you probably would have designed into the device yourself. Go out and buy one!

5 out of 5 stars Garmin got me there   June 18, 2008
The Garmin 260 nuvi is a great tool to the person who does a lot of driving and doesn't have time to look at a map, while driving. The maps are either getting smaller or my eyes are getting worse, but the Nuvi got us to our destinations and it was well worth the price. It has enough bells and whistles to make the novice excited and the old perennial traveler satisfied.
