5 out of 5 stars Garmin nuvi 760 Rocks!   June 12, 2008
4 out of 4 found this review helpful

I have owned my nuvi 760 for about a month and love it! I wanted a wide-screen unit with no unsightly or pop-up antennae and the ability to store multiple destinations from various start points, without having to fool the GPS (trick it to make it think that it's somewhere else). Plus, the prices have come down tremendously, so you can get the nuvi 700 series for the same price others paid for the nuvi 300 series about a year ago. Garmin came out with a sharp looking leather open-flap case for the 800 series (allows you to use the unit still in it's protective case), that should fit this unit nicely...already on order. The Garmin series portable navigation units are very user friendly and easy to use right out of the box (downloading the instruction manual is purely an option). This review came from regular folks on the job, not a paid advertisement agency...no kick-backs here!

Pros: Great display size; automatically changes display background during day or night for perfect viewing; love the hidden antenna (no pop-up, like the previous versions); came with free download of 2009 maps; able to add points of interests that are not on map; voice prompts & FM audio (transfer voice prompts via radio); able to store up to 10 routes to/from multiple destinations (no need to disable or fool Home GPS); came with internal traffic antenna & 3 mo free traffic monitoring; rated for 5 hours on a charge; however, I used it intermittently for 2 weeks+ on one charge; nice black trim (matches dash perfectly); can store up to 2GB of stuff on an external/slot SD card; a real show stopper among the family!

Cons: Had one incident were the voice got confused and kept stating keep West; although the screen display was correct (traveling north). Also, when driving through a neighborhood and looking for an avenue like NE 2nd or NW 2nd, the voice prompt will only announce, "turn on 2nd Avenue"; NE or NW are not mentioned, so you may get a little confused on where to turn. However, the unit will recalculate your directions, if you sway from your destination...not bad, unless your on a one-way street. Overall, it's a great product!

5 out of 5 stars Better than an armful of maps   June 10, 2008

This is the first gps I have ever owned. I am extremely pleased with the Garmin nuvi 760. I bought it just a week before a 12-day trip through Texas (Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and various locations in East Texas). This device came in very handy for plotting routes between the various stops. It was even more useful when selecting destinations in each city. Too long a wait at one restaurant, just find another one in the built-in directory and plot the course. Se an add for a local attraction? Type in the address and it will get you there. The only thing lacking is a nice carrying case, but that can be purchased separately.

5 out of 5 stars Best GPS Unit for this price range on the market.   June 9, 2008

This is a gps navigation unit with some extras like fm transmitter, fm traffic information, Bluetooth and mp3 player.
based on the $400 price range you can not find a better GPS out there that offers that much.
If you don't care about the extras look in to buying the nuvi 260w.

PROS.
*The nuvi 760 is very well build and very easy to use even for someone that never used a GPS before.
*The spoken street names is for me the best feature. It makes navigating so much easier.
*The mount works well, the voice options are all clear and very easy to understand.
*The screen is visible even in direct sunlight, probably the brightest GPS display I've ever seen.
*Address system remembers recently used State, City, and Street names.
*Where am I feature and multiple routing option.
*Excellent Bluetooth compatibility, it works with my T- Mobile Samsung SGH-T739 Cell Phone Katalyst even though it was not part of the compatible phones list.
*Yes it works with SDHC cards, I have 4 gig SDHC transcendTranscend 4GB SDHC CARD (SD 2.0 SPD Class 6)
*Headphone/audio out jack is also a feature that saved me from the FM transmitter in combination with this product Sony CPA-9C MiniDisc and Discman Cassette Adapter
*Picture viewer, even though I will probably never use it myself.
*Webupdater software provides an easy way to keep the nuvi up-to-date with the latest firmware, I used it to get the latest 2009 map and firmware. After the firmware update the unit could get a satellite lock of about 3 bars even from inside the house.
*Like I said excellent satellite lock I was able to drive through Manhattan without any loss of signal, something I could never do with the TOM TOM One.

CONS and things that are missing.
*FM transmitter is underpowered, and for a city like new York with a congested fm dial even thought it works for me with a little static, it effects the clarity of the navigation voice, the mp3 quality, and unfortunately the Bluetooth, however there is a very easy fix like I mentioned above. A cassette adapter (for those vehicles older than 1-2 years without a auxiliary jack) to connect to the audio jack. I found out that the FM transmitter in U.S. version is lower powered compared to European version. This is mentioned in owners manual page 52. (which is missing from the box and can only be found online in the garmin webpage) So the problem is local laws, not Garmins ability to make sufficiently powered FM transmitter or a software problem. Actually all the reviews of the Euro product on the amazon.co.uk mention how great the FM transmitter is.
*A case is also missing and I ended up buying the Garmin Carrying Case for nüvi 660 Portable GPS Navigator (010-10823-01) and it fits like a glove..

5 out of 5 stars Very pleased   June 9, 2008

I received this as a gift after much careful research. I love it! It is easy to use, the screen is clear and easily visible when driving and the routes are practical. I particularly wanted "spoken" street names and maps that were easy to update. Although this is not the most recent model it meets all of my requirements. I also purchased the Garmin A/C Power Cable and Garmin Portable Friction Dashboard Mount as useful accesssories.

4 out of 5 stars Not Perfect, but Close   June 9, 2008

Bluetooth
For me, it only works ocasionally. It doesn't see to play well with my Treo. I think the problem is more with the Treo than it is with the Nuvi.

Traffic
I find it only about 20% accurate. More often than not, it tells me there is a delay, when there isn't. If I were to "avoid" these false alerts, it would cost me more time, rather than save it. I will not be paying for the subscription.

Routing
I'd say that it's generally very good. One thing I could live without is when you are on a highway/freeway/interstate, and the next turn is to keep going on the current highway/freeway/interstate. It's like saying, "turn strait," and is mildly annoying. I would prefer if it only told me when I had an actual change of course to make.

FM Transmitter
This one is a toss-up. Sometimes it seems to work very well, but as you travel over long distances, you have to find new stations to broadcast to. It's virtually useless in dense urban areas (Los Angeles, Seattle), but works better in the adjacent suburban areas.

MP3 Player
I loaded up an SD card with a bunch of music. Keeping in mind that it's primarily a GPS and not primarily an MP3 player, it's not bad.

Sound Quality
The built-in speaker leaves a lot to be desired, overall, but how high can you expectations be on a unit that's as thin as the Nuvi 760 is? If you are able to utilize the FM Transmitter, it's a non issue.

Points of Interest
These are generally very good, but some shops are not to intuitive to search for. I tried to search for bike shops, but there wasn't really a category for that, so the search just kept on searching. Most general searches are very useful, however, such as gas stations, banks, dining establishments, etc. The thing that's nice here is you can add or even import custom POI's. There are web sites out there that list, for example, all Costco stores, or Walmarts, or RV Parks... you name it. One that's especially useful are Red Light Cameras or Speed cameras where you get a proximity alert, even if you aren't "looking" for hte camera. Most camera warnings are subscription based, but there are free one's out there. I traveled to Portland, and was warned about 4 lights I wouldn't have otherwise known about. Just Google POI or link from Garmin's web site.
