works great, and TAD works even if not connected directly March 9, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Despite dramatic language in the manual to the contrary, this unit works fine for me with the telephone answering machine on a different floor. In fact, I've owned brother mfc's for 10 years,in two different residences, and they always work fine in TAD mode without it connected directly. I e-mailed brother, and they said that they are aware will work in this configuration, but some may have problems, so they won't guarantee it. Very strange.
Not great for Mac network March 5, 2008 It's an excellent little machine, but when on a Mac network you can only use it for a printer, all of the other functions you need to plug directly into the computer you are using for the fax or scan. This is normal, it's just a minor bummer. It prints and copies really well connected to the Airport Extreme, which is what we got it for. Your first toner cartridge is not good for the usual amount of copies, that's normal. REMEMBER: Never leave the drum exposed to light, it will damage the drum, which is the shiny purple thing that the toner is connected to. Do your best not to expose it to sunlight. It will last much longer if you heed that advice. Oh yeah, since we're using Airport with it, we have to cancel out the "setup printer" as "USB or Network" every time we log in or restart the computer, which is truly annoying, although it's only 2 mouse clicks.
Great printer for the money. March 2, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Excellent output. Works wonderfully with OS X. No problems. Conservative toner use. I'd buy another without hesitation.
My first non-HP printer purchase! February 29, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've been a loyal HP hardware fan until about a year ago when I purchased my latest Photosmart - one of the inkjets with the 5 different color cartridges. The quality on that printer is amazing, but after going the rounds with HP about why it seems to burn through color cartridges even when I've got it set to print black and white only... I finally decided I could have bought another printer with the ink that was literally wasted. I decided to get a black and white laser for my primary printer - and not an HP!
The setup program looked a little quirky when it was running through all of the driver installs, and I half expected it to finish and only have partial functionality. I've never been a fan of all-in-one devices, because it always seemed like one of the devices failed to work properly... but after setting this up last night, everything works perfectly - I don't have a phone line, so I didn't try the fax.
There were some complaints about the scanner not being very versatile and not allowing you to adjust your scanning area. I've got Google Picasa installed on my machine and after installing the Brother software and drivers I opened up Picasa to find the scanner ready to go - you can do a quick preview scan, adjust your scanning area, resolution, and color depth - everything you'd expect to be able to do with a stand-alone scanner.
Network setup was automated as well. I connected it to my router before I ran the setup, and it automatically detected it on the network and installed my drivers - didn't have to mess with a thing.
So far I'm extremely happy with this printer, and from the other reviews I've read it sounds like it should hold up very well... Time will tell ;)
Great network printer February 27, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a perfect printer for home-office use, the network function works very well for both printing and scanning. Software loaded with ease, and the print speed is amazing. We have a network of four computers three are pc and one is a mac, all work with the printer and scanner. Fax works great as well.
