5 out of 5 stars A great recorder   February 9, 2008

A great recorder. I am very happy with it. I have used it in a lecture setting rather successfully with the Olympus ME-52 Noise Cancellation Microphone. I was surprised how clear voices from around the room were. There was an annoying background noise, however, I have not yet experimented with the filter settings to remove it. Also, can use software such as Audacity to remove the noise. Easy to import dictation to my PC, however it was slow. I have not yet tried Dragon Natural Speech with it.

Uses 2 AAA cells giving longer battery life. Also easier to recharge since it uses a set of 2 NiMH cells.

4 out of 5 stars Works great, just needs a case   February 8, 2008
This recorder works great. I use it to record meetings at work, and it does a fine job. The software to download the files to a computer is easy to use too. Only thing it needs is a case. I keep it in my computer bag, and it really needs a hard case of some sort to keep it from breaking. I'm searching for a hard case for eyeglasses, or something similar.

5 out of 5 stars What a joy - and for me, a necessity   February 6, 2008

I'm a singer/songwriter, and for decades, have always had some sort of recorder to carry around with me. I've had $300 stereo recording Walkmans, and cheapie Radio Shack cassette models. I never wanted a mini-disc, `cause it seemed to that the format wouldn't last. This thing ROCKS! I've had it for a month, and haven't needed to crack the manual yet. Downloading is a breeze on both Mac & PC. I can't recommend it highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars olympus recorder Dragon Naturally Speaking transcription   February 2, 2008

I have Dragon Naturally Speaking Version 8, Preferred, which cost about $200 ( Dragon 9 is supposed to be even better). I use this for medical recordings and it works fine. I have previously trained the words on another microphone on my computer and also used the Dragon import documents to import words.

Olympus DS-30 Digital Voice Recorder
Just bought the Olympus DS 40 Recorder and have an excellent experience transferring to my computer.

Here is how it actually works:

It comes with the software DSS Recorder. This software works well. Supposedly the recorder can work with the built in Microsoft software also. If you use DSS, you must spend $9.95 to upgrade. Then it will automatically work.

I have written instructions below that might be helpful. However, after figuring this all out, I found the instructions in the DSS player help files under "If you upgrade/things you can do with DSS Player/supported voice recognition"

The instructions say you can use the Microsoft software, but I installed the DSS recorder that come with the recorder so not sure how to do this with the Microsoft software.

AFTER installing the software, turn on the recorder
1. push the stop plug in the recorder to stop any play back or recordings.
2. using the connector that comes in the package, plug in the connector to the USB port.
3. connect the other end to the recorder under the plastic cover that says "USB" through the firewire connector that comes with the recorder.
4. The DSS program will automatically start. Upgrade to DSS player plus (see help menu "If you upgrade/how to upgrade DSS Player".

Once you have upgraded, you will be able to transfer files from the Olympus recorder to the computer:

5. On the left, in the lower window, an icon will appear for the recorder. Open the recorder and then find the folder that contains the file(s) that you wish to use. Click on the folder.
6. A list of files will appear on the right hand side. Click on the files that you want to transfer.
7. On the top menu, go to Download and then do download the entire folder or download selected files. If you are not sure which file is which, you can use the player icons (arrows), to play the file.
8. The files will then be downloaded.
9. Click on the files. Then a Red icon appears. Go to it and be sure that Dragon Naturally Speaking is selected.

10. Go to the menu option that says "Voice Recognition". Go to Voice Recognition Range to recognize either the entire or part of the file. Then click on " Start Voice Recognition". Then click on the Dragon icon. You will see an icon appearing that says, "transferring to a WAV file".

11. After conversion to a WAV file, a window appears that says, "Transcription Options". You can transfer to either a Dragon Pad window or a selected window. I usually transfer to Microsoft Word and it is best to already have a document open in this case so that the program can transcribe into it. If you wish to use Word or another program, check "A selected window." I also use selected commands which allows me to dictate commas, periods, new paragraphs etc. After selecting whichever options, punch "Transcribe."

12, A new window opens and says that the program will start transcribing in whichever windown you click in next (this is why it is easiest to already have the document available). So click in the window, and the transcribing starts. You cannot use your mouse or computer during this time. If you have multiple files, you might need to click the transcribe button again and click on the document again to get it to start. Another issue I ran up against was that Dragon may say that it is out of memory for saving documents. In this case, I needed to just keep clicking the transcription button and it worked, but a little irritating. You can increase the size of the file in Dragon.

Before really using it for recognition, you need to train Dragon to recognize your speech. In order to do this, CLOSE the DSS recorder. Then go to Dragon and look for the new user files. Under this, you will find one for Olympus DS 30/40/50. Follow those instructions exactly. The most important thing is to be sure to train at least 15 minutes on one file. If you cut it short, Dragon will not let you train the recorder. If you stop the recorder (pause is ok), the recorder starts a new recording file, so best to just put it all in one file. Try to be in the same environment and speak as you will when dictating.

Then, when you want to remove the recorder, be sure to use the "Safely remove hardware". Sometimes, depending on the way I remove this, it comes up as a USB mass storage device on the menu at the bottom of the screen. Click that and then it will say now safe to remove.

It was worthwhile to read the documentation that came with the recorder which was clear and worth an evening.

5 out of 5 stars helps with class lectures!!   January 25, 2008
I am so glad I purchased this olympus DS-40. I searched out all the different brands of voice recorders and settled on the olympus and I am so please with it. It gives a great and crip clear recording, even when ther is back ground noise. you don't get the nasty back ground noise like the heater system etc... This is by far the best recorder I ever purchased. I use it mostly for college and record the lectures, but it also comes in handy to record myself and to remind myself of things to do/study, etc... The recording is so crisp, I am amazed with it. It runs on two AAA batteries, but they seem to last forever, which is another great aspect! There is an adaptor available to purchase if you don't want to buy batteries, but they really do last a long time. The only thing is I wish it came with a carry case, but I put mine into a hard covered eye glass case to protect it and that works well, they cost only $3.00 and work perfect.. I highly recommend this DS-40. I have tried other brands in the past, but none can compare to the Olympus!! thanks Olympus!!
