5 out of 5 stars Olympus VN4100PC Digital Voice Recorder.   August 29, 2007

I attend several meetings every week and find the Olympus VN4100PC a very convenient and useful tool, especially as I can then upload it to my computer for future review.

The reproduction is clear (8/10), even at a "round the table" meeting with several parties present and the 144 hour recording time is more than anyone will ever need.

At a tad more than $45, it's a must for any businessman who simply has to remember everything that was said and who said it. I highly recommend this unit.

5 out of 5 stars Why didn't they have these when I went to college?!?   August 24, 2007

One of my daughter's professors encouraged students to record lectures due to difficulty of the class material. We therefore needed a recorder asap. Settled on this concept (digital with pc link) and ultimately chose this brand/model over a competitors. I felt compelled to write a review because of the low rating this shows, even though most were for the sale, not the item.

We ultimately chose this item because of one feature: the ability to speed up or slow down playback speed while you are listening!

I hope the next lecture my daughter will use the voice activated recording setting to see how much smaller the resulting file becomes.

The recorder has an area on top to put a thin strap through, we had one at home that worked fine. Found a cellphone case into which it fits perfectly, to help protect it in my daughter's purse!

The digital software worked fine (Win XP), had to let windows install the software though, after connecting the recorder to the computer, the cd's self-install didn't result in recognizing the recorder. Just a minor setback though, as file transfer was easy.

So far so good, recorded clearly and can hear loudly enough during playback. If you register the product online at Olympus, they extend the warranty for another month (I belive the warranty was longer than the competitor's also...)

3 out of 5 stars Not good enough   August 11, 2007

Only one preset time recording is available and it must be reset each day.
Not what I expected from the product discription.

To burn a recording to a CD is far nor hassel than the thing is worth.

I returned the product and eat the shipping.

This recorder is suitable for my purposes. The playback through the internal speaker is of rather poor quality. The sound sometimes seems to be discontinuous. The software provided is adequate but limited usefulness. There are no significant editing capabilities. Overall, I find it meets my needs for voice activation, PC download, duration of recording and battery life.

3 out of 5 stars Battery life ?   August 5, 2007

Battery life much shorter than advertised.
When downloading to computer, it only creates format that is usuable on the computer -- won't play anywhere else ! I worked around this by making CD on PC, then going to MAC, importing it, then making new CD. (which then plays in car stereo, walkman, etc.
