Does What It Claims June 23, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I need a portable scanner primarily to scan documents to pdf while on the road. This scanner does that task well. It scans a page reasonably quickly, and the scanned image appears on the screen quickly. The quality of the scanned images is very good, meaning that text in the pdf file appears fairly sharp, like a good copy. You have to feed each sheet carefully so that it feeds straight, but this is not too difficult, and the sheets generally went through straight. I have yet to find a portable scanner that is a fast as, or produces as good image quality as, a nonportable desktop sheet fed scanner like the Xerox Documate scanners.
I previously bought the NeatReceipts 3.0 scanner, but the quality of the scans was poor and it took a LONG time for the software to process each scan and have the pdf file appear on the screen. This Pentax DSmobile 600 scanner produces better quality scans, and the pdf file appears on the screen MUCH faster than with the NeatReceipts.
The Pentax scanner is slightly taller and rounder than the NeatReceipts, but it's still pretty small and light.
Great Windows Scanner, Not So Much For Mac June 19, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this product primarily for use on a PC. I have my mac as well and decided to try it out. I have been working on it for about 4 hours and have not figured out how to get it to work on my Mac. I've tried Yep and the twain driver from Pentax but I can only get it to calibrate and then it just sits there. After getting a bit miffed I installed it on my PC running XP and it took about two minutes and I had beautiful quick scans that are perfect for my work in the field. While the Mac issue is frustrating, I wasn't expecting much on that end...so unless you have pretty solid Mac skills, I wouldn't bother with this scanner.
On the move scanner June 14, 2008 The pentax DSmobile 600 scanner is quick and simple to use while on the road. A great light in weight scanner to help the busy executive like me. The cost is good too.
Very Good Product but Waiting for Vista Software CD June 12, 2008 I had to send for the CD with Vista compatible software so I'm not going to talk about that yet. I'm hoping that it'll work for both 32-bit and 64-bit Vista. I need both. Some old reviews on this topic weren't very positive. I suspect things have changed by now. This forum needs more on Vista support for the product.
I set up this scanner from the CD in the box on my XP machine. I was scanning and using its entire suite of capabilities, which are many, in about 10 minutes. The built-in scanning to PDF is easy and makes good "copies" with no hassle. Getting the material to be scanned to line up properly takes some practice but this isn't needed for 90% of what I do. I was also able to scan into my Twain compatible applications with zero effort. This is much better than other products I've tried to use that were "Twain" compatible. I am especially happy about how good the scans of photographs come out and how easy ot is to adjust scan area to match the size of the item to be scanned. Super "ilities" product for portability, capability, felxibility, and capability.
