Unbeatable for the price June 5, 2008 If you want a receiver that has all the new technology but doesn't break the bank, look no further, you've found it. This thing has features that receivers twice as much don't have. You have full HDMI 1.3 compatibility (which isn't even yet fully utilized) making it pretty future proof. There are a plethora of inputs all going out (and being upconverted mind you) to one HDMI output. At 90W per ch, there's plenty of power to fill even a pretty large living room. For $380, I bet you won't find a better receiver than this.
Not happy May 30, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
After reading other reviews of this product I decided to buy it in hopes of being satisfied with it's performance. I should have been more skeptical. I spent five hours setting this receiver up. The "Audessey" set-up didn't work after several tries. So I gave up and manually set up the speakers. After one week the receiver started picking up the infrared signal from my cable box remote. Every time I changed a TV channel the surround mode on the receiver changed too. What the heck!! Needless to say, It's back in the box on it's way back to the store.
I Like It May 23, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It has taken some programming and set-up, but the effort has been worth it. The up-conversion (via the HDMI) looks great. The sound quality for all sources is great. I would recommend it.
Excellent Reciever May 22, 2008 Well all I can say is this reciever is very well built and I have had absolutely no issues with it once. I did find that when I first hooked up my speakers to it I set everything up in the menu but was getting no sound. I had to turn up the volume to at least 30 to get a decent sound but it is still low level. With new recievers I guess the volume must be set higher like 50 to get an optimal listening experience but once there try going to 65, now that is loud!
Yes the reciever does weight a bit and is very big indeed. I also like the various listening modes it offers so if I don't want say dobly digital for a channel I can put it in say all channels and I can hear the same sound out of all speakers and hear some things better without having to turn it up. I like all the features it has and I bought it because it is a value for the money deal and that it has HD Audio decoders on board for the future of HD. This reciever I would highly recommend for those looking for a good reciever that offers something more that others brands don't in its price range. Onkyo is a good brand name from what I have read.
Awesome bargain, with unexpected caveats May 18, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
With the Onkyo 606 hitting the market recently, this receiver can be found here and elsewhere at or south of $300 - and at that price, this receiver is peerless. I'm very happy to have this and will get many years of joyous use, I'm sure. There are three things I think you all should know, however:
1 - This volume knob is a let-down A cheap plastic volume knob on a $600/list receiver? For shame, Onkyo. This is annoying because the limp insensitive knob is in no way a reflection of the muscular sound the receiver pumps out. I want a nice piece of motorized metal, consarn it!
2 - Audyssey is nigh useless I think this might work wonders with cheap speakers, but with a Polk RTi series 5.1 set-up it buried the highs and made everything sound underwater-ish. It did a great job guessing distances, but I turned it off after 30 seconds and haven't looked back.
3 - The heat I don't think this runs MUCH hotter than other AV equipment, but it does run hot. I'm being cruel and unusual to it and have given it less than an inch of ventilation above; no problems. I might've heard popping but it's nothing big. I think some people are being big babies or expecting a $600 receiver that's a great bargain to sound like a $3,000 receiver. This is more receiver than any of us need, but it will get hot. I'm going to give it more room to breathe to hopefully extend its life, but it's not impossible to cram this somewhere and forget it.
CONCLUSION: At these prices there is no better receiver to be found. GET THIS NOW! Amazon is the best e-tailer around and can be trusted to stand by what they sell and how they ship it.
