5 out of 5 stars Almost the best $30.00 headset   August 1, 2008
This is my first pair of V-moda's. I have owned many pairs of headphones; they typically end in some sort of gruesome death. Thus the quest for the decent $30.00 headphones.

I would give these a 4.5, weighted on their cost, but they are probably a 4 in the class of sub $50.00 headphones. The sound is not really linear, really tuned for contemporary music, not classical. I listened to a bit of old jazz as well and they were decent, but perhaps a little too round in the low end. But it is too much perhaps to expect something truly linear for $30.00.

As the name would imply the headphones have pronounced, but acceptable, non-boomy bass. The way they accomplish this is clever. The headset does not actually go completely into the ear canal as some other models do. As a result, part of the ear becomes a resonant chamber. The long plastic piece where each headset wire comes out is there to keep someone from putting the headset too far in the ear.

So, despite the dumb name, and V-Moda's really silly web site, these are actually a decent pair of earphones. As with most transducers (including speakers), the sound of them will change over a period of time -- a day or two of heavy use should do it. The high end becomes a little less strident.

The headset themselves are made from lightweight, but fairly sturdy plastic. The headset wires are lightweight. They come with 3 different sized earpieces. Be sure to try all three out as these headphones fit differently than many other in-ear headphones.

You should probably be looking at the Sennheiser CX300 as well, which are more well regarded....but I think these are surprisingly good as well -- they have a different set of qualities -- the Bass Freq has very good detail in the midrange, which I wouldn't have expected - lots of little details pop out, including acoustic music. Happy so far.

1 out of 5 stars Sounded great when they worked   July 30, 2008
Received earbuds in early May 2008. Near the end of June, only one earpiece would work, or they would not work at all. I only used these casually while at work, so it's not possible they were worn down or otherwise blown out. I have tried my husband's Skullcandy Smokin' Buds Ink'd Earphones - Red earbuds and, while not as comfortable, I'd rather buy a product that will last longer than 60 days. I would say the sound is comparable or slightly better than Skull Candy.

5 out of 5 stars Best earbuds I bought for the money   July 30, 2008
I always listened to my ipod with the apple supplied ear buds. Then I went out and bought a 200$ set of Etymotics. The isolation and sound was incredible but 0 bass. I then bought a set of the V-moda's bass freq's. Since then I have snatching these up and giving them as gifts to my music loving friends. They have excellent bass response and great clarity. I cannot say 1 negative item about these. These are my main staple for lawn mowing, yard work, and listening while riding the harley. For the price you would be stupid not to have a set of these in your possession.

I bought these headphones for a sansa clip mp3 player. I am trying to use these while I exercise. The problem is they will not stay in my ears when I am running or jumping rope. I have tried every size fitting and the only one that fits in my ears is the smallest size and they still wont stay in my ear. Thats a big problem for me. I bought these headphones because they say they have extra bass which is good for hip hop music but I don't hear it. The sound does get muddled when you listen loud and the music sounds like its coming out a tin can at times. I would not buy these for the gym because like I said they will not stay in your ears. I don't know how they retail for 50 dollars. Thats just crazy.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money   July 26, 2008

I have been using the original earbuds that came with the iPod. They have been fine but it was suggested that other earbuds would give better sound. Reviews of the V-MODA here and elsewhere were most mostly positive. So I bought them. Big mistake. I can't understand why they were given good reviews.

The sound quality is noticeably inferior to the original Apple earbuds. Apple's have a full, rich, 3D quality. V-MODA's sound flat, dull, tinny and do not provide an enjoyable experience. I have tried every EQ setting. Nothing sounds good. It's not that there is too much bass. There isn't enough of anything.

Maybe for podcasts and other spoken recordings these would be fine. But, for music--any kind--these are a bad choice. I can't recommend them. If I ever have to replace the earbuds I have now, I'll buy the ones from Apple.
