5 out of 5 stars Better than expected   August 23, 2008
Upgraded from a Harmony 676 that provided several years of good service before several of the buttons started to become unresponsive. The Harmony One provided two very pleasant surprises:

1. In every way the process of programming the Harmony One was easier and simpler than I expected. The software on the CD loaded and upgraded from the web with no drama whatsoever. Not true with the 676 years ago, so things have improved. Although I had not logged into the Logitech Harmony website in years since I had not changed equipment, I had kept my user name and password. Actually, that was a surprise in itself. Logged in and there was all of my previous programming and settings ready to go. The software recognized the Harmony One immediately and downloaded the setup on the first try. AND EVERYTHING WORKED WITH NO TINKERING NEEDED. I find that a big surprise for something this complex.

2. The look, feel and function are really luxurious. Buttons are well placed, have great feel, the unit feels good in the hand, is well balanced and just plain works great. Period.

Nits: It's all black and can be hard to spot if you leave it some place out of the way. The black plastic on the face is high gloss and is a finger print magnet--so much so that a microfiber cloth is included. The charger has a light that as far as I can tell only indicates that it is plugged in. It would be cool if the light indicated fully charged somehow. And finally, the packaging is probably designed to look cool and draw the eye in a retail space, but I wish it were more environmentally friendly.

4 out of 5 stars Once set-up is complete, it becomes five stars!   August 22, 2008
Logitech Harmony One Advanced Universal Remote
What an amazing product. My husband was hesitant to get a universal remote. He had talked to a couple of audiophiles at work who told him the best ones are very expensive, and aren't quite what one expects yet.

Well, I convinced him to give this one a try after reading all of the excellent reviews, and making sure that all of our devices are supported. I had the remote set-up and working in no time.

That is, except for our DVD-carousel. Granted, this is not the most common piece of equipment, but as I said earlier, the Logitech site claimed that this was supported. I spent hours searching online to figure out how to get it to work just right-to no avail. Finally I gave in and called tech support.

To my surprise, my call was answered immediately. Within half an hour my remote was working the way I expected it to, and furthermore, I knew why it hadn't been working before. (Turns out there is not yet a "program" for the Sony DVD carousel, but since it uses IR, it can be programmed. There were a couple of extra steps that weren't explained in the manual.) Kudos to Logitech tech support.

We now have only one, or shall I say ONE remote sitting out, and we find using it to be extremely simple. As I said in my title, now that the remote is set up, it receives five stars. We have yet to go back to the old remotes for any operation. This, with quite a variety of equipment, including two game consoles. (NOTE: Harmony One does not control the consoles, the Wii because it uses bluetooth, and the Xbox 360 because it requires an extender, but all we do is press one button: Play Wii, and all of the other equipment is ready to go.)

This product is highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars It's Going Back - Not Worth It   August 21, 2008

I really wanted to love this remote. We just put together our first home theater system and I decided to splurge on a really good remote to simplify the process of controlling a plasma tv, satellite box and home theater audio/dvd system. Nothing fancy, just eliminate the clutter and consolidate the functions into one remote that controls basic functions like "watch TV", "play a dvd", and the like.

From the beginning the Harmony One was a nightmare. The website programming functions are terrific, straight forward and even intuitive in spots. No problem putting together a "program" to download to your remote, right? That's where the "fun" began. After over 6 hours (vs. the 30 minutes Harmony claims) the thing still is not programmed properly. At first, the system simply locked up at 3% complete on the download screen. Then, after calling tech support and variously changing USB ports, USB cables, rebooting my computer, rebooting my DSL modem, disabling anti-virus and the firewall (a ridiculous requirement for a consumer product, by the way!) I finally got something resembling a download. Now the unit kind of works, but usually will fail to turn on (or off) one component at the beginning or end of the sequence, or will "forget" to change the home theater unit to the correct audio source for the task selected. Favorite channels programmed on the website and appearing on the remote, do not function with the satellite box. The built-in help on the unit can correct errors on the run, but does not seem to "teach" the unit any revised or corrected commands that it identifies in its feedback question and answer routine.

I have spent over 4 hours on the phone with Harmony tech support and much more time on the website and screwing around with the remote. Enough is enough. Tomorrow, the unit goes back to Amazon with a request for a refund based upon a defective, unworkable product. If I am going to have marginal performance from a universal remote, I do not intend to pay a premium for it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent remote with just a small durability problem   August 19, 2008

Well I've had this remote for a few weeks and overall I'm very satisfied with it. I decided to order this remote after reading many reviews here on Amazon. Setup was an absolute breeze for me and I'm somewhat confused as to how people on here have so many problems with setting it up. I consider myself a "power user" so naturally I skipped the manual (never read them for anything except furniture) and popped in the disc. For reference I used a 64 bit Windows Vista Home Premium system to configure my Harmony One. After installation was complete I started up the Logitech software without restarting my system (wasn't offered the option to do so). As far as I could tell this did not cause any problems during configuration. During the configuration, the software asked what devices I owned and if I wanted to set up any activities. Naturally I wanted to do this since activities are half the point of paying so much for a remote control. During the activity set up (for example Watch TV), the software asked me what source my HDTV needed to be on to receive cable, whether I use a cable box to watch cable, what I use to control volume (I use my 5.1 surround system), and etc. Transferring my configuration to the remote took longer than expected, but the wait time was not terrible. The only problem I've had with this remote is its durability. After a few weeks of service the Harmony One resets itself after putting it into the charger or after giving it a light tap near charging contacts on the back of the remote. This is most unfortunate as otherwise this remote is amazing, and luckily Amazon is next-daying me a replacement which will be here tomorrow.

Update: My replacement Harmony One works fine but the screen has a lit pixel. I'm debating on exchanging it, but I don't know if I want to bother for one lit pixel or not.

5 out of 5 stars Smoking Remote   August 17, 2008
Slight problem with the software installation, but overall a great product. LCD Touchscreen is awesome. The main issue with any remote is line of sight ability with the components it is controlling. Very easy to setup. Easy to use. My 4 year old mastered it in a day.
