Great GPS but some stupid quirks October 3, 2008 I love this GPS for the most part. It is great, says out street names, has a nice bright screen and everything that you expect out of a great GPS. Trust me it has all of it. But now for the stupid quirks which irk people like me and I'm sure irritate many others too using this one. If these little things can be improved upon I think this would be the best buy at this price
1)ROUTING: Sometimes actually shows longer and more roundabout routes. This is actually not a small quirk but a bigger problem, but ever since I've been using it, I've encountered it only once and thus didn't want to make it a sore point of concern. So just once it took me places I didn't want to go whereas I could've just used the highway and got there much earlier. The inroads were in a run down area thus irritating me even more.
2) NO QWERTY KEYBOARD: WHY the heck would these companies not give a QWERTY keyboard. I mean like there's got to be a seriously daft and dumb engineer or R&D person sitting in their labs who comes up with this great product but gets this stroke of genius to NOT put in a QWERTY keyboard in the GPS. Is you've not used their version of a keyboard then trust me you have NOOO idea how irritating it can get when you trying to put in an address. And if you're sitting in a lousy car without air conditioning on a very hot summer day trying to key in an address then please try to keep your cool or you may just want to throw the unit out of the car in anger.
3)VOLUME: Volume somehow is not that great and if you're listening to music which is remotely loud then its very easy to miss the directions being given out.
4)SUCTION CUP/ HOLDER: Another very irritating thing about this GPS is that these guys have just done a very lousy job at the physics of the gadget. I have an Acura TL and somehow with this cumbersome antenna sticking out of the back of the screen, they had to end up giving a suction cup/ holder just a tab bit too small. Therefore everytime it is quit a pain to attach the GPS to the windscreen becuase I need to constantly adjust and readjust the antenna and the positioning of the holder for a few minutes till I can get the position right and get it attached right to the glass.
5) SIGNAL: it takes a little extra time sometimes to acquire signal. Seems quite a primitive problem but happens not too often thus it hasn't bothered me enough to downgrade the rating of this product.
Rest everything is great about this unit. the leather cover, the whole interface in general, bluetooth, and many other functionalities (which I may never really use..but its good to know they're there).
So go ahead and buy this. I hope GARMIN comes up with a solution to fix these little oddities in this unit. But I personally feel that many users might not find them to be such a big deal as to fore go this great price and not buy the 350. Decision is yours. If such things might trouble you then you may want to assess which brand do you want to go in for. But then I don't know how much better are the other manufacturers' offerings in the market. Because this just might be a best of the worst kind of a situation.
All in all its a good product at the end of the day and gets the job done!
Garmin nuvi 350 October 3, 2008 I have an OEM GPS built into my primary vehicle, and bought the Garmin nuvi 350 to use in a second car and in rental cars when I travel. The fact that it will operate on the internal battery for 4 to 6 hours is a great plus. No need to plug it in to the rental car, I just recharge it back in my hotel room at night. It is also convenient to use while out of the car and walking. The unit's performance is excellent, it has a very sensitive receiver and works fine when just sitting on the center console of the car, I am very pleased. The unit was close to $1,000 when it was first introduced and now at about $200, it is the best value for the dollar available. I was so pleased I just bought a second unit for my daughter.
Awesome little GPS October 3, 2008 This is one of the best little, inexpensive GPS's I have ever purchased! The directions (text-to-speech) are accurate and easy to follow, provides a lot of information (step-by-step text), and the compass mode is very useful.
Very Good October 1, 2008 Very good , not perfect. It's fantastic the GPS speaking the street names. Battery is not so durable. Enjoying a lot.
Don't Buy October 1, 2008 Don't buy. I would have returned this Garmin nüvi 350 if I bought it from Costco where returns are easy. For about the same price, check out the Magellan Maestro series. I bought this from Amazon because of the 4.5 stars from over 2,000 reviews.
Pros: - Small
Cons: - Text-to-Speech is lousy. - Occasionally (usually just before destination arrival), the device stops "directing". - Routes are not optimal. - MP3 works but why would you want to listen to music through this speaker?
I have owned this for over a month now and have done weekly web updates so I should have the latest software. Again, don't buy.
