Dreaded Lens Error...SD870IS is a Ticking Time Bomb September 28, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This was my first CANON purchased back in 3/08 and just got the dreaded lens error today. The lens will not retract nor focus anymore. I figured I couldn't miss with a name brand like CANON, plus I'm the type who is very careful with cameras. I did not see this coming at all and don't recall reading about this prior to purchasing. But after a little Googling, there are a ton of reports by consumers about this error, NOT ONLY WITH THE 870, but with MANY POINT&SHOOTS by CANON. I've previously owned an OLYMPUS and SONY P&S, and never had any problems with breaking down.
This camera has just about everything you would want in a point & shoot (ie, wide-angle lens, large preview screen, quality movie mode, multi-focus points, image-stabilization), but it's really a ticking time bomb, since you never know when the lens error will render the camera useless. Many consumers have reported that CANON WILL NOT fix the problem for free, even if it's under warranty...I have serious problems with that.
I hope others don't take this review as a disgruntled consumer complaining about an issue that doesn't happen all that much. It's been widely reported on the web, just search for 'canon lens error'.
If CANON's point&shoots didn't suffer from this glaring problem, I'd give this camera 5-stars, but until they fix this problem, I don't see how anyone could give it anything more than 1-star, if not no stars.
Spend your hard-earned money on something that will last. STAY AWAY FROM THIS CAMERA.
My husband loves his new camera! September 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The camera was an anniversary gift for my husband. He is really pleased with his new toy. He likes the compactness of the camera and the ease of using the features. The pictures and videos come out clear, and the camera is user friendly. I wasn't sure how he would rate the camera; he might have given it 5 stars if he had been writing this review.

Canon Powershot 870IS versus Panasonic Lumix TZ5 September 22, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
A month before I purchased the 870IS, I purchased and returned the Panasonic Lumix TZ5 (Thanks to Amazon for easy return process). The TZ5 had a nice 10x optical zoom, but dissapointing picture quality and poor first shot delay. Canon's 870IS is a small, lightweight camera with great picture quality and good first shot delay. My only complaint with the 870IS is the date stamp only works in "postacard" mode (a non wide-angle mode). I purchased caselogic's UNZ-2 small universal pocket camera case, which fits the 870IS perfectly. Caselogic UNZ-2 Small Universal Pocket w/Screen Protection (Blue/Silver)
AMAZING point&shoot cam September 21, 2008 It's an outstanding camera. Almost all the features of a proffesional one. It could be a bit smaller, but it fits perfectly on your pocket, anyway.
