4 out of 5 stars Good maps! Dont listen to the rampant complaining !   June 27, 2007

If you want more detail, then get the larger scale maps. These serve the purpose of their scale (1:100,000). If you need more detail then you will need MapSource US TOPO 24K, National Parks. It has a scale of 1:24,000. That Should be all the detail you need. I only give 4 stars because it doesn't have some of the main trails of the northeast.

2 out of 5 stars Buy it if you must, but only if you must   June 5, 2007

Garmin makes some sweet GPS units, but their software is still in the stone age and is a good candidate for extinction. This package is a fine example. The maps are images of lines, so you cannot route your trip - it doesn't know that a road is a road, or a trail is a trail. DeLorme's "Topo" software is superior on both points but you can't upload DeLorme maps to a Garmin. The Mapsource software only runs on Windows, has a clumsy and unattractive user interface, and is badly out of date. For instance, it is easily confused if you use USB to connect to your GPS because the software expects you to use a serial port (for those too young to remember serial ports, they were popular for transmitting small amounts of data, slowly, in the late 20th century). Also you cannot load the CD's to your hard drive so every time you want to use the software, you have to load the CD for your region, and you have to wait patiently while it goes back to re-read the CD every time you scroll to a different part of the map. God help you if you ever scratch the CD.

4 out of 5 stars Better than nothing but still lacking in detail   June 1, 2007

Good as long as you don't require detailed maps and topography. Certainly better than the base map pre-installed on most Garmin units but simply lacking in detail.

1 out of 5 stars Piece of junk   June 1, 2007

They sent me version 3.02 so I have to download updates to get it up to version 6.x! Why do they send outdated versions and place the burden on the consumer? And of course you'll only realize your software is outdated when you have mind boggling problems getting it to work or even installed.
This is the way to drive away customers.

4 out of 5 stars Great for my GPS   May 30, 2007

I bought this software mainly for use onscreen on my new 60CSX GPS, and so far it's been great for that. I've also sampled some of the trip planning features on my laptop, and that's worked out well, too. My only compliant is that the back roads aren't labeled on my GPS screen, so it makes it hard when I'm driving and want to know quickly what road I'm looking at, but the routes are pretty accurate, so I can usually identify by that. Also, some of the data is out of date for those remote roads. I've found a couple so far that are listed as roads, but have been converted to hiking trails, or reverted to elk trails, many years ago. Coupled with a more detailed (and sometimes more recent, though not always) Forest Service map, it's just fine. Well worth it for adding detail to your onscreen GPS maps.
