5 out of 5 stars Completely customizeable.   May 3, 2006

We rarely use our old weather radio, because like the boy who cried wolf, its perpetually sounding the alarm because there MIGHT be a thunderstorm 30 miles away. But with the SAME technology, I was able to program this to only go off on warnings that affect our area. For watches, it just lights up and puts a text warning - no waking up for things that haven't yet reached the emergency level.

As others have noted, it'd be nice if there was more control over the light level, and the time could be larger. But these are minor considerations. I'm buying another radio for my office.

4 out of 5 stars Works great, setup harder than necessary   May 3, 2006

I have a WR-30 for myself, but I bought this one for my dad. I tried to help him set it up over the phone, but I still had to go over and see if he set it up right. It was just difficult for me to read the instructions and try to explain them to him. In the end, I think he did set it up right, but didn't know it. It works well when there are storms, once we had it set up. There needs to be a quick setup guide, if all you want to do is put in the station number and your county code.

For the price point, I don't think I can do any better. I kind of feel Midland should had provided a way to clear alerts without having to "wait" for the alert to go away, or, without having to unplug power and remove a battery.(requiring a clock and date reset) But, that's a very minor complaint. It does everything else quite decently. The wakeup alarm tone could be a little louder, but again that's being "picky." Overall, I like the radio. That last tornado was too close last time. This radio should alert us for our specific county and the county to the west of us.

I was even more impressed with how well Amazon.com handled our order!

5 out of 5 stars Does what it says   April 26, 2006

I bought this radio as a weather radio and just to be informed of weather emergencies while asleep or when the power goes out. It's in my home office and when there is an alarm, I am able to hear it throughout the house even with TV on or people talking. It allows me to be prepared for emergencies before an alarm is even broadcasted elsewhere and because of the battery backup since I loose TV signal often. This machine does what it says, and does it well!!Easy set up, instructions clear.

4 out of 5 stars Great product, although instructions could be clearer   April 20, 2006

The Midland WR300 weather radio allows you to monitor weather alerts for only the counties you specify (using the S.A.M.E. feature). It also allows you to turn off notifications for certain weather alerts. For instance, I turned off the notification for thunderstorm watches. The WR300 wisely does *not* allow you to turn off notifications for tornado warnings, so you don't have to worry about accidentally disabling its most important feature. The battery backup saves all your settings in the event of a power outage.

The instruction manual was adequate although a bit clumsy. The S.A.M.E. code instructions in particular are dense and require a few read-throughs. But once you wade through the instructions and get the radio set up, it couldn't be simpler: it turns itself on for your specified weather alerts and turns itself off afterwards.

It's so easy to use that I'm going to buy another unit for my elderly mother. However, I won't force her to set it up herself.
