Great June 8, 2008 This is a real great dedicated flash. I had the SB-400 but upgraded to this one and like it so much more. The tilt is great. And real good control using my Nikon D80. And a real great price from amazon compared to other sites.
A must have upgrade June 7, 2008 Before getting any upgrades for your new Nikon, you should consider an external flash. Your indoor photography will go from snapshots to studio like work in no time. The SB600 has met my expectation. My only complaint is that the LCD is a bit small and I would rather have a on off switch instead of a button that you just hold down. Other than that, great recycle times and good results.
I love this flash! June 6, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a must have accessory for your Nikon SLR, or Digital-SLR camera. A much better value than the flagship Nikon SB-800, you get a lot more bang for your buck. It's my opinion that the top of the line Nikon SB-800 Speedlight is about 10% better than the SB-600 Speedlight, but the downside is that it is also 70% more expensive.
Sure, the top of the line SB-800 is a better unit, but considering that the SB-600 comes so close, you should seriously consider if you really need the extra features of the top of the line model.
If you are just looking for a flash that you can bounce off the ceiling, than the Nikon SB-400 might be for you. But the SB-400 isn't nearly as full featured as the SB-600, and has only a slight price advantage. The SB-600 is without a doubt the way to go to get the most flash for your money.
Great flash June 6, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
SB-600 or SB-800? If you are reading this and have not yet purchased a flash for your iTTL Nikon, you are asking yourself this question. I went for the SB-600, and put the balance into a fast prime lens. I would have bought a 50mm f/1.8 if I'd spent the extra on the SB-800; I bought the 50mmf/1.4 instead, using what I "saved" on the SB-600 over the SB-800 to make up the difference.
For me, this was the right choice. I don't need the extra reach of the SB-800. I don't need the extra life of the fifth battery. I like the lighter weight of the SB-600. I only use one flash, so even off camera, the SB-600's remote feature works fine. And for those times when pushed to a limit (e.g., dark cathedral where no flash allowed), I now have a faster lens than I would have had to fall back on.
Of course, if budget is no issue, and you don't mind the weight, go for the SB-800. But unless you are positive that you need one of the more esoteric features of the SB-800, the SB-600 will do fine.
Having had a D40, D80, and now D300, I would not buy this for the D40 (D40x D60). It ruins the whole usability of the smaller, lighter form factor. With the D40's built in ability to use flash at 1/500, the SB-400 is a much better choice.
Great lighting tool June 1, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The SB600 is a great lighting tool. It works as you expect it to work, and apparently its pretty well built (mine has fallen down a couple of times and got some pretty bad hits and it's still working flawlessly). Though if you're really interested in lighting and have a more serious intention, I'd recommend getting the SB800. It has more power, functions and comes with gels and some other accesories. It's worth the money. Anyway, what i did was get the SB600 first, and then I added a SB800 to my rig, and they work together like bread and butter. Got to love nikon's wireless system.
