It made my trip to France a breeze! July 19, 2006 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I just bought the Nuvi 350 before my recent trip to France. In France I used it every day to take me to hotels, attractions, small towns, find the nearest gas stations and get me to the Geneva airport. I also used it on foot when exploring cities and in my backpack when biking around from town to town.
Simply put- it was amazing. The maps were very good- only a few roundabouts were missing but that wasn't a problem. The only issue I encountered was that occasionally when I entered a tunnel and lost the satellite signal, it wouldn't be able to locate the satellites again unless I cycled the power. Apparently this is a known problem and Garmin is working on a software fix.
I would recommend the Nuvi 350 to anyone- techie and non-techie alike.
OCD Gadget Shopper Ecstatic with Purchase! July 19, 2006 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
My name is Phil and I am an Obssesive Compulsive Gadget Shopper. I have to get the latest and greatest e-goodies for the best price or I start to contemplate the end of the world... that said, I got the Nuvi 350 through Amazon for $608 and free shipping (yes folks keep checking as the price fluctuates with demand, imagine that...)! I recently purchased a new car with all the bells and whistles however the GPS option was well over 2K and I travel quite a bit, finding myself in a rental car 2 to 3 time a month. That's what started my OCD search for a decent portable GPS unit. First off, let me say that I am a huge eBay fan, however I would not recommend an eBay purchase on a Nuvi for two reasons.
Reason 1: Directly from the Garmin site: "Products sold through online auctions are not eligible for rebates or other special offers from Garmin. Online auction confirmations are not accepted for warranty verification. To obtain warranty service an original or copy of the sales receipt from the original retailer is required. Garmin will not replace missing components from any package purchased through an online auction."
Reason 2: Quite a few of the units sold through eBay are loaded with the original map database Mapsource Product City Navigator North America NT v7 and City Navigator North America NT v7. A new map databse (v8) was released in April of 2006 and if the unit you buy has been sitting on a shelf for a while you will not get the latest and greatest mapping software database (the thing that actually gets you from point a to point b and should be the freshest info available).
OK so how does my new Nuvi 350 work? Freakin phenominal! Right out of the box, plugged it in, turned it on and presto, it aquired the satellites and gave me my exact location in Florida! I have been driving around with it for a while now and have used it flawlesssly in Hartford Connecticut, Raleigh North Carolina and Atlanta Georgia. The built in battery has run for well over 3 hours aquiring the satellite signal without a problem after I forgot to pack the car adapter. The plug is a standard mini USB which is the same as the plug for my Blackberry but I was hesitant to try it on the Nuvi...(although I believe the current requirement should be the same).
I highly recommend it... and hey, no worries I've done all the obssesing for you. Enjoy!
Good, but not perfect July 19, 2006 17 out of 18 found this review helpful
Right out of the box, we tried two business addresses which could not be located. When it works though, it works well. In making this purchase we missed the fact that updates (if wanted or needed) for the maps need to be purchased. Here is the response I received from Garmin on this issue:
"The company that updates our mapping, Navteq, releases updates every 12-15 months. The latest update was just announced, and will be ready to order in August. The updates require an unlock code for the device for a fee of $75. Since you have registered your device we have your email address. There will be an email notification sent to you of the updates arrival. At that time you will visit our website, and go to Mapsource Unlock. You will need to follow the onscreen prompts to Unlock Update Disc."
Not Trustworthy (yet) July 18, 2006 11 out of 18 found this review helpful
This is my first GPS and the Garmin was purchased over Tom-Tom because Garmin maps were supposed to be MUCH better than Tom-Tom. Tom-Tom (same price range or less) does, however, have a feature lacking on Garmin (350 Nuvi) in that one can select 'the quickest route or the shortest route' while Garmin only provides one which seems to match up closely with MapQuest maps which must select the shortest route all the time which could result in taking much more travel time because the longer route usually involves interstates or 4 lane highways. However, the most disturbing event was the Garmin did not 'recognize' a North bound entrance ramp on a 4 lane highway and actually routed us South on that highway to a previous interchange and THEN routed us North. Since this was a local test, it only involved about 10 miles, but if this happens in an unfamiliar location (one of the reasons for spending all this money), the previous exit could be many, many miles away. Garmin support said the latest download would 'fix' the problem. I have not been able to take the time to verify as yet. If that were to really fix the problem, I would consider raising it a star or two. The unit does not have a very reliable mounting set up. Don't know why Garmin didn't make it work on the same mount as the Street Pilots.
outstanding product July 17, 2006 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I can't find a negative think to report on this product. Amazon pricing is another story. I found this for $609 shipped at shipdog.com. Amazon wouldn't match the price.
