Nice Features; Easy to Use July 22, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this just before my NYC trip. Routing was perfect, recalculation (if I missed a turn) was quick and voice prompts were clear. The only reason I put it 4 star (and not 5) is the screen froze in one occassion. since the voice prompts were working, it was not a major problem. Reseting the screen was easy but required me to make a stop.
Good device, poor battery July 21, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I used it immediately in three trips to Philadelphia, Washington DC and New York. I was satisfied with its performance. It is definitely a life saver in an unfamilliar city. It catches the satellites fast calculates/recalculates the routes fast.
It made some minor mistakes, too. It told me to turn left where there was no possibility of doing. Gave some wrong turn commands shortly after passing an exit (I could still turn as it warned the coming of the exits 0.7 mile before, too). The 0.7 mile before turn warning is not that convenient if your are driving 65 mph on highway. I wish it were adjustable. To conclude the worst thing is the battery life it has. While driving to Washington, it just gave low battery warning in less than 2 hours. Note that the Amazon page for the item tells up to 8 hours of battery life. Although it is still mathematically correct, the difference is huge. I didn't listen to MP3 or looked at any photos with it. So I should be close to that 8 hour limit. I will try it again and will return if the battery problem is certain.
One more thing. I downloaded and installed the 2009 map from the company website and noticed that a large shopping center (around 65 stores and a theater complex with 16 movie theaters) is not seen on the map. I know that the shopping center has been there for at least 1.5 years.
Garmin Nuvi 350 July 21, 2008 I received for my birthday, and have had a lot of fun figuring it out. It is best to go to the web site and print out the full manual, as it has all the detailed info on how to use it. the volume is adjustable, but could be louder in order hear over a stereo. Also, a "repeat instructions" button would be helpful.
Garmin rules! July 21, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Let's start with the usual excellent service from Amazon. I received my order in far less time than estimated, even using the Super Saver option, which has been a common experience for me over numerous orders placed with Amazon and their affiliated vendors. I haven't had too much opportunity to put my Nuvi 350 through its paces, but what experience I've had so far is most impressive. When following a route to a frequent destination that deviated from the Nuvi's recommended route, it adjusted within a second or two to the deviation and recalculated a new route. I'm not sure that this actually happened, but it seemed to remember that route because when I left to return home, it calculated the route using the roads that I had originally taken, rather than simply reversing the logical recommended route. The database of POI's is impressive in its completeness. Many local businesses that I would never have thought would be in there are listed. Many local roads (I live in a fairly rural area of northern New England)are shown that aren't even in a print atlas. I get multiple satellite links indoors, and finding satellites in the car is no problem, even with the unit sitting on my console rather than mounted in the windshield. Even more impressive is Garmin's support. I had read other reviews reporting enormous difficulty with support, but my experience has been quite the opposite. As soon as I linked to their web site to register my unit, I was told that I was entitled to a free 2009 map update. I opted to download the update rather than pay $10 for the DVD, but had a lot of problems with the download (firewall problems, I think). However, at that point the option to get the DVD was no longer offered. I emailed Support detailing my problem and received a response within two days with instructions on how to order the DVD. After placing my order, I received an email from the same service rep confirming my order and advising that I should have the DVD in about two weeks. Just two weeks later I received the DVD, as promised.
Download maps July 21, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have as yet to use the Garmin... I have tried three times to do the update download of maps. Supposedly should only take a couple of hours since I have DSL. I actually left the system up for 14 hours one time !!!
It gets into about 60 - 70% and simply "locks up".
I have the unit laying beside my computer when and if I get around to spending several hours waiting for the complete download !
Disappointed? Yes !
