I have tried refills, etc., but found the most economic approach is to use what the manufacture provides. I find that by being conservative with how and what I print the I get by on about 1.5 changes a year. I do most of my printing in greyscale and find it very acceptable.

Didn't realise there would be two ink cartridges in the box, was a very pleasantly surprised when it arrived. I thought it was a great value for just the one.

I have not tried a different brand with my Canon printer yet. Seems like I can get lots of documents printed but photos take lots of ink. I would stick to Canon brand ink though.
