Amazon's Kindle July 8, 2008 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
The Kindle is a good substitute for a book and I like the one I just bought.
First, let me run through the negatives.
It is pricey - mine cost almost $400 with New York tax (there is no shipping charge).
It needs to be reset if you leave it off the charger too long.
It doesn't have color capabilities so don't use it to buy a book of great art. The black and white pictures aren't so great either.
Now to the positives.
It is lightweight, easy to read (you can increase the font size which is useful if you're my age), and easy to carry and handle. It is very well designed and is user-friendly.
It is a snap to download books and they are cheaper than book stores.
In a few years, kids will not have to fill book bags, they can just kindle them and use their Kindles.
If you lose your Kindle or if it is stolen, Amazon can cripple its functionality. Unlike an IPod, this will make it less attractive to thieves.
Overall, this is a new entry into a very promising technology. I recommend it highly.

I've had my Kindle for bout two months now and overall I love it. Buying and downloading books is very easy and the selection available is very good. I must add, however, that I'm on my second Kindle device. The first one "died" at a very inopportune moment--I had it loaded with books to read on my way to a 3 week trip to Europe. I switched it on at the airport and the screen froze. Consequently, I had nothing to read during the trip (I had to break down and buy an overpriced paper book at an airport bookstore).
That said, when I returned from my trip Amazon promptly replaced my Kindle--very quickly with no questions asked, and all has been well ever since.
It's a great device and I'd recommend it highly.
But I want more July 8, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I am a traveling Social Science academic. I bought and LOVE the Kindle because I can take my library with me and not have to ship and worry about my books. Unfortunately, most of the current Kindle selection of books, but fortunately not all, are fictional or "lite" academic. The hard core academic stuff currently is not electronic. Specifically, the historical and economic books that I want, especially the very physically heavy ones, are not electronic. When, oh when, does the academic community catch up with the rest of the world and put their books in a format where my library is primarily portable?
So my ONLY big complaint is about selection. The product is quite nice. I love the size, the font possibilities and ease of use. I love the cover that protects it all. Reading a book is quite nice. Since I often read in bed, I can read, not loose my place as I turn over, or get up for a snack, etc. It also travels well. Just the book and the charger and off I go. Since I'm a new user, I once got overwhelmed in waking up my Kindle, but soon I used the on/off switch. That cleared up the problem. Now I leave it off, when I have finished for the day. I've not learned yet how to underline. If that is difficult, then I will have to figure that one out as well. How difficult is it to get books when I'm out of the country? Currently, I don't know. I am still learning my Kindle.
If you can tell me of large or small academic publishers who are going electronic, I'd love to know. If you need help in identifying some publishers to target, just let me know. Since I've bought the Kindle, I'm not interested in buying books that are not electronic. Hopefully soon, I can get more of my academic favorites on my Kindle.
Good, but. . . . July 8, 2008 9 out of 13 found this review helpful
I'm pretty happy with the Kindle. I've used it for several hours a day since receiving it and have had no problems with any of the advertised features. Unfortunately, there is a serious design flaw, namely, the page-turning bars. These are situated down the entire length of both sides, so that the only place to hold the device is along a thin strip at the top and a few places in the bottom third. If the Kindle is in its holder, the cover also can be used. Although hardly insurmountable, this problem is absurd, since there's absolutely no reason for such extensive bars. They accomplish nothing and create great a huge, unnecessary nuisance. I've been reading "analog" books for 55 years and never found page turning an onerous task. Two small, sensibly placed, buttons would be fine and would allow the reader to hold the book any way he wanted.
I love it so much I bought 2 of them. July 8, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I bought Kindle for my 86 year old father because he needs large type to read books now, but I used it first to make sure it was easy enough for him to figure out. Well I kept that one and bought him another one because I love it so much. I travel a lot and use it on the airplane so easily. Downloads are fast and easy and cheaper than buying the physical book. I've had so many people ask what it is when they see me reading with it. I think it's great.
