Very Impressed-Now the Kindle feels natural December 7, 2007 54 out of 57 found this review helpful
All I can say is that after spending a couple weeks reading on the Kindle the ultimate compliment I can give is that for the past few days it feels so natural to read on the Kindle that I have actually- on several occasions now- reached for the corner to turn the page like on a traditional book. Great product- very impressed.
hasn't this been tried before? December 7, 2007 7 out of 122 found this review helpful
I personally do not think that there is that large of a market for this, maybe 20+ years down the line when all the techie kids have grown up, if they even still read books.
there is still a huge market for paper books. people who read books do not want to watch a screen, they want to turn pages in a book and throw it around and have something physical to touch.
this is too expensive to be marketable, at an $80 price you will get more buyers, but I can buy more then a years worth of used paperbacks for the same price of $300 (witch would get me NO books on this electronic device)
sorry, I have just seen many companies try this unsuccessfully, and using the amazon name will do nothing, it is a issue with the device itself and people WANTING to use this.
It would be like trying to build a bicycle that is full of electronics, it has no real application and is marketed to the wrong crowd, it serves no purpose besides fulfilling the needs of a tech-head who DOES have the money to spend.
Kindle missed the point! December 7, 2007 3 out of 112 found this review helpful
It's amazing how much effort and money are spent to replicate a paper book into a gadget. But Kindle/Amazon, just like Sony and all other crusty, starchy, musty publishers miss the point on why people don't read. WE DON'T HAVE TIME! Reading books requires EYES, and today our eyes are required and tempted by many other things, like working, or walking, or driving, or watching the idiot box. So why is so difficult to have a Kindle that does all it does and be able to read the books to us, while we drive, while we shop, or walk? Not read by an actor (too expensive), but by the computer. The technology exists. Put that on the Kindle and I'll pay $400 and $10 per book. The math is simple; at best I can read 12 books a year, but I can listen to 50 books a year, easily. And, you'll sell more books to people who wish they'd have time to read books, or the ones who do not know that books exist.

A "wireless, portable reading device"?
We already have such a thing. They're called books.

I am enjoying my Kindle very much!
I would like to address some of the pros and cons that you have probably read about from other reviews.
When turning pages, there is said to be a 'flash' as the e-ink rearranges to show the next page. I think this effect has been mis-named. The way I see it, it's more like a camera shutter. I say this because the screen gets dark briefly, like a closing shutter. Not white or bright, like a flash. Whatever you call it, it doesn't bother me one bit.
If I could rate the cover alone, I'd give it 4 stars. If you follow the instructions, it fits very well. It holds the Kindle securely. It makes holding the kindle to read 10 times easier and more enjoyable. It has that really nice elastic strap like moleskin notebooks have. The front inside of the cover has an extended square 'bump' that, when closed, fits onto and protects the screen perfectly. The one drawback is the difficulty in turning the wireless switch on and off. I like it off most of the time to save battery charge, but sometimes would like it on. Doing so is a bit of a pain. Without rearranging where on the Kindle these buttons are, the next best thing would be a 'cutout' on the back of the cover so you could reach the buttons.
Are the page buttons too big? That depends. If you read the kindle in the cover, as Amazon suggests, then no. With no cover, you have to take more care not to inadvertently hit them.
Some have noted that the SD Card slot is not easily available, it's inside behind the back cover. Uh, that's a GOOD thing. Using a SD Card would be for extra long term storage. You wouldn't need to keep pulling it in and out. And if you're not using a SD Card, the empty slot is protected from gunk and goo.
The keyboard doesn't bother me. When holding the Kindle, sometimes my thumb rests on the keyboard, but the keys are 'stiff' enough that the keys do not get pressed/activated. When I do need to type, I appreciate the standard qwerty setup. The response rate is a bit slow, but I can type ahead and it catches up.
The reading experience on the Kindle is wonderful. I vary the font size for my comfort and then go to it. I can read for longer stretches of time because of the font size and the Kindle's light weight. I enter "the trance" when reading a good story (currently: The Golden Compass).
I bought this ereader to read, not to surf the web, not to work on spreadsheets, not to jam to a tune, and not to call my mother. The Kindle does what it's supposed to do very well.
Suggestions for Kindle version 2.0: - More Font sizes. Why? Sometimes, for example, size 4 is a bit too small, size 5 is a bit too big. (gee, I guess I'm picky). I believe more font sizes would not be difficult to program. - Charging ability via USB. The manual says it can be done, but folks say you have to have the Kindle completely off, and even then it takes over 24 hours. - More cover color options!
How many stars? I wavered between 4 and 5 because there is room for improvement. Erred on the side of 5 to offset all the stupid so called 'reviews' that aren't reviews at all.
