It's not a toy... I'm reading a book! January 31, 2008 32 out of 35 found this review helpful
Do the phrases "get off the internet!", "Turn off the TV!", or "Stop working", sound familiar??
Last night when I was told to "stop playing with my new toy" I responded, "I'm not playing, I'm reading a book." And that was that.
My Kindle isn't used to check the weather or search for the best BBQ around Oakland, although I am sure it can with it's elementary web browser, I have a computer for that. It's used as a book and it does it will brilliant ease.
In my opinion, I don't think this device is very photogenic and you will have to see it in person to get a feel for it's aesthetics. They say a photo adds 10 pounds... the Amazon pictures make the Kindle look much larger than it is. I find it's just the right size. With the cover on, people think it's a personal organizer or a diary.
The Kindle is all about the reading experience. I'm a fan of the large page buttons. If it had small buttons like it's competitors, it would disrupt the reading process. They are easy to accidentally press when passing the device around to friends, but I've learned to put the device in stand-by mode. Plus you get a nice stand-by picture that is an elegant touch.
I also noticed that the Kindle doesn't distract your reading with a clock ticking on the display. A time is displayed only when you hit the Alt+T buttons. If you do this from the home page, it would show 8:45. But if you try in the midst of a book, it will display "Fifteen till Nine"... in an essence, you are still "reading". The display disappears after a few seconds so that you can continue with your reading. I thought this was a clever feature.
The chrome navigation scroll bar is magical. I haven't felt this kind of pleasure navigate around the device since Apple invented the touchable scroll wheel.
I finally figured out the convoluted Location codes this morning. Example: If it shows 1020-9, this means that you are currently on page 1020, and the next page would be 1029. If it shows 2593-602, this means that you are on page 2593, and the next page is 2602. So in case you did want to take note of your page number, you only have to remember the first half. Of course, you could just bookmark the page...
Dictionary lookups is by far my favorite feature and, for me, justifies the $399 price. I also use the highlight feature a lot. I find myself looking up words in conjunction with highlighting the sentences. I also found myself highlighting phrases that I would like to incorporate into my vernacular. Some examples include:
"the Jack Russell terrier... on the end of the cot with her hackles raised."
"She stares lasciviously down at the men"
"Blinking demurely at the floor"
As you can see, I'm loving my Kindle. It's just like reading a book (albeit, a very expensive book!), but with design features that enhance the experience. Let's just say that with the Kindle, I am "pleased as punch!" (a clipping from Sara Gruen's, "Water for Elephants")
GREAT!GREAT! KINDLE January 31, 2008 27 out of 30 found this review helpful
I bought this kindle before christmas 2007 and have downloaded over 30+ books onto this little kindle...I am so very very pleased with this product that words fail to describe it... I can now take all of my favorite books with me wherever I travel, either state-side or overseas.. I can down load boortz news or drudge report or money news .. it's great... My only minus is that some of the older books that I enjoy re-reading don't seem to be available for kindle.. some of the popular authors also are a little hard to get.. the battery life is really good and last a long time... I look forward to many years with this product. I will also buy another when I need to...The is the best way to read a book..I can change the font when my eyes become tired.okay already, I'm sold on this item... happy reading..

I have loved the Amazon Kindle from day one. I have even ordered a second one for backup. I get all my newspapers, magazines and blogs delivered to me each morning before I wake up With out fail. The try before you buy option with sample books and 15 day trial period on newspapers, magazines and Blogs, helps not to waste money on what you buy. Literally...out of the box and I was reading within minutes. And should you have a concern or question the customer support staff is so friendly and helpful. They even e-mail you a question after the call to make sure that all concerns were resolved. You can't beat it. It's so much better than the Sony eReader. I had the Sony for about two weeks and then found about the daily delivery of newspapers , magazines and blogs with whispernet, I switched almost immediately to the Kindle. I will look forward, however, to them making a better book cover to hold it in...but for now the black one will do. I very satisfied customer (and I'm really picky).
I am very happy with my Kindle January 31, 2008 15 out of 20 found this review helpful
I received a Kindle for Christmas. I like it very much, and most of the books that I have been loading onto it haven't cost me a thing. Buy yourself a Kindle then use their free email service to send yourself copies of classic books from sites like Project Gutenberg are Bartleby. My biggest gripe is that more books are not yet in the Public Domain.
Kindle is very easy on the eyes, and it is far more enjoyable to read a book on Kindle than on a backlit PC. It is comparible with reading a real book.
The only reason I didn't rate the Kindle as 5 stars is that you have to contort your hand to hold it so that you don't hit a key that changes pages. It isn't that difficult to accomplish, but they definately could have designed it better. I also read a lot of non-fiction and I wish there were more non-fiction books available for the Kindle.
Met all my expectations and more! January 31, 2008 35 out of 37 found this review helpful
I received my Kindle this week and I am just so happy with it that I had to share a use that I have for it other than the norm. Of course, I love having novels, non fiction books, and samples to puruse at my convenience, but I have a somewhat unusual use for it as well. As a graduate student studying to be a speech-language pathologist, I am required to read a lot of peer-reviewed journal articles. I also have to study extensively for not only the tests for my current classes, but also the comps and PRAXIS exams that will be coming at the end of the year. Most of the other students in my program end up carting around enormous binders filled with notes and outlines. I am so happy that I can have all of the reading materials that I have mentioned above in my Kindle in my purse. This enables me to study, or simply read for relaxation, whenever I have the time wherever I am. I only wish I were independently wealthy so I could supply my classmates with their own Kindles. (They have been a bit green with envy upon hearing what it can do.) Anyways, I have noticed after reading every review and discussion board thread while waiting for my beloved Kindle that not many people have praised its use as an educational tool and I wanted to make sure that it wasn't ignored.
