I have read and read February 25, 2008 4 out of 115 found this review helpful
I have read and read. Finally, I got to what I wanted. After spending $400, I would still have to purchase books to read, as I understand it. No freebies here. If I am wrong, please let me know, someone!
But, will not buy until these types of readers are under $200 and offer books for free.
It's great, I love it, but . . . February 25, 2008 22 out of 27 found this review helpful
The Kindle is wonderful, for me, and for my life. I don't have to trek to a bookstore, I don't have to wait for delivery, and when I'm stuck somewhere I can always get a new book when I finish with the one I'm reading.
If you have a lot of paper to review, convert the documents and put them on your Kindle. Say goodbye to that aching back from hauling home tons of paper. (I'm in publishing, so agents and editors would be a prime group of customers for this.)
I love: --the capacity, --the ability to buy books anywhere, anytime --the (lack of) weight --the ability to replace my books if the device is lost, breaks or what-all --the ease of inserting memory --the clarity of the screen, and ease on my old eyes in any reasonable light condition --the tagging and sorting functions.
On the other hand, there are some things that bother me. They probably won't bother most folks, or they'll be subliminal, but they include: --the hyphenation and justification routines are nonexistent. Text tends to be fully justified, but this just means HUGE spaces between words on some lines. If you're putting content on this, set it for left justification, or you'll regret it. --there's no option for lighting the screen. I wouldn't use this often, but I'd like to have a switch on the back that would turn on an LED that would radiate through the screen like this device does over a page: Light Wedge. --the Kindle store is not as easy to shop as the regular Amazon. It needs more tags and categorization, so that browsing for books is easier. --the lack of ability to organize books and documents into folders or a hierarchical structure of some kind. --when viewing graphics, it would be nice to be able to use landscape as well as portrait mode, and to magnify them.
On the whole, even for a 1.0 device, this one is waay cool. And I'm not an early adopter, in general.
need more top rated books February 25, 2008 10 out of 20 found this review helpful
I love using the kindle, however I would like to find John Grisham's new book and a few others that are not listed. It would be 100% if all the new and top 20 books are included.
Gotta Love It!! February 25, 2008 25 out of 28 found this review helpful
I've had my Kindle for just about a month now and I have to say that I love this thing! I never carry books with me (except on vacation and then I usually have a backpack of ten or more books, just in case), but I take the Kindle everywhere. The other day I was at the supermarket and the check-out line was horrendously long, so I pulled out my Kindle and read the New York Times (which, by the way, only delivers in my town on Sundays, but I can read it everyday on my Kindle). Several people at my gym have asked me about it. They think it's pretty cool that I can enlarge the font so that I can read while on the treadmill (and boy does it make the time go by faster). My fifth grade students are in awe of all it can do. They especially like the fact that I can look up words I don't know without having to pick up a cumbersome dictionary or lose my spot in my book. The best part, though, is Whispernet. When someone mentions a great book they've just read, I can download a sample right then and there . . . no waiting for the next trip to the bookstore. I think the Kindle is just great!
The best thing money can buy for a bibliophile February 25, 2008 30 out of 33 found this review helpful
I have had my Kindle for 10 days now - it has become such an integral part of my life that I cannot imagine life without it. Enough has been said by other reviewers about the incredible screen, book selection, convenience of whispernet, the ability to email other documents to your kindle, ability to share books and so on. I agree with all of that.
The biggest plus for me is that I had no idea how it would help me reclaim so much lost time that I didn't even realize was dribbling away, that I now put to good use thanks to my Kindle.
3-hour flight delays, flight cancellations, waiting for my son's playdate to show up, lunch break with a taste for something to change the pace, an interesting passage from Jack Welch's "Winning" to share with the team at work, reference back to some good self-help book, of course, the Journal while waiting at the 15-person long line at Starbucks every morning for my latte, hilarious PG Wodehouse novels I hadn't run across on my numerous book store prowlings in years, Eastern philosophy after an out-of-town business dinner, catching up on a key document in the cab on the way t a meeting without having to power up my laptop. And oh, just the pleasure of browsing the bookstore on Amazon, anywhere , any time.
I have already finished 4 books (about 3 times my normal pace) in the last 10 days. I had no clue it would be so worth the $400 - and I am by no means an early adopter - I waited two years before buying my first IPod.
I think I will always have a fallback paper book collections for the keepers, but in sheer convenience and ability to carry a variety of books around in the best camouflage ever - nothing can beat the kindle.
If you are the kind of person with varied reading interests, but need to read when the mood strikes you, can't decide what to take on a trip, read many books at once, need to make great use of your time, don't think twice - order it now!
