Holding My Breath July 23, 2008 3 out of 30 found this review helpful
I am now using my fourth kindle. The previous ones were defective and the new one is starting to malfunction.
Where is the Times of London? The New Yorker? The New Republic?
Often when you check for new items on the kindle you are informed that there are none. Then Amazon.com e-mails with a list of new books.
Frequently you receive day old newspapers.
LOVE reading in bed with the Kindle! July 23, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I love reading in bed at night, but two of the things that have been problems are trying to hold a big hardcover book while laying on my side in bed - there is always the preferred (more comfortable) page and the other page I have to hold the book in an awkward position to read. I've always hated this, as long as I can remember. The other problem is turning pages bothers my husband - he'll be trying to sleep and the sound of the pages turning keeps him up (light sleeper). Reading the Kindle in bed at night is SOOO comfortable! I don't have to even hold it at all. I just prop it up next to me, and turning pages is silent. The only thing that could improve this is some sort of optional built-in light, but using a book light is really not a big deal. I got the Fulcrum Multi Flex LED light, and it works great.
I gave this 5 stars not because it's perfect, but just because the reading experience while using it is just SO good. I love it! The small issues, like the tendency to push the 'next page' button when you don't want to are issues that I can deal with. The cover is not the greatest - I put velcro in mine to help make sure the Kindle won't take a tumble out of it, and a M-Edge will be on my Christmas list. The screen would be better if it were white, not grey. But I'd rather read black text on grey background on a Kindle than black on white in a big, bulky book any day. If a new Kindle comes out with a true white background, though, I may have to upgrade.
The flashing at page turns doesn't bother me, and I normally push the button when I have about 3-5 words left to read, as it takes about 1 second for the page to change, and then I feel like I'm reading pretty seamlessly.
For novels the Kindle is AWESOME. I think if I were reading a book that I had more of a tendency to flip back and forth from chapter or section to section, it might be easier with a real book. But for what I bought it for, I'm enjoying the Kindle very much!
Discouraged July 23, 2008 7 out of 25 found this review helpful
I am sorry to say that the Kindle wasn't all it was advertised to be. I gave it to my husband for his birthday and have already returned it. Why? The design is such that it is almost impossible to hold in a relaxed position without inadvertingly turning the pages. Then once you turn the page-unless you are very careful it is difficult to hit just "previous" page. Also, we had several times when it would just freeze up and had to be reset before we could continue-and of course, had to go back to the beginning of the book and once again find our place. I am also sorry it doesn't have a back light. Once improvements are made in the design, I feel it could be a great product. But, for the price and the problems I experienced-I was very dissappointed. Amazon was wonderful in crediting me back after I returned it.
Kindle Moves the Bar July 23, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Reading my first book on the Kindle with full enjoyment. It's convenient, fun, light and very practical.
Price needs to drop. When it does we will buy one for my wife.
Kindle is easy on the hands July 22, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I have a lot of reasons to love my Kindle, but after using it for 6 months, by far the most important is that it is easy on my hands. As a person who begins and ends each day reading, I had been reduced to only reading when sitting at a table, because of arthritis in my hands. I couldn't hold heavy books, and even paperbacks were becoming unwieldy. Enter Kindle, and I can read anywhere again. It is so light I can hold it in one hand and I find the buttons are very easy to access. Couple that with the ease of purchasing reading material anywhere and at any time, being able to adjust the size of the typeface and having a vast choice of reading material, I can find nothing to complain about.
