2 out of 5 stars overpriced and overrated   December 3, 2007

i bought one of these from a warehouse club at a clearance price and i'm glad i didn't pay full price...the hype and marketing from logitech would lead you to believe that you connect your remote to your computer, connect to their database, enter your products and you're done..that wasn't my experience at all, the software i needed wasn't on the disc, i had to d/l 60 megs of software before i could even use the basic functions of the remote..after entering all my info i discovered that there is a bit of troubleshooting to do in order to achieve anything useable from such an expensive device and even then i wasn't impressed..to date it still has a problem trying to figure out which input to use when i want to watch a dvd and it pales in simple commands when compared to my remote from comcast, with my remote from comcast i can change the channel on the cable box and adjust the volume on the tv without having to change the function keys..on the Harmony remote i have to switch the remote from cable to TV in order to accomplish the same task, there just might be a way to make it behave similar to my comcast remote but at this point i don't have the patience as i'd rather learn something that i could benefit me in my career...

I have this remote about 2 weeks. This remote is working great. I am very happy with it.

5 out of 5 stars Great remote--some minor set up problem   October 14, 2007

Over a week ago I received the Harmony 720. It looks sharp, and I love the way it wakes up the LCD screen when you pick it up. I just upgraded my home theatre with a Toshiba LCD, Oppo DVD, Brighthouse HD DVR and a Onkyo SR705 receiver all of which have HDMI. I had a pre-existing old Sony CD carousel.
You first have to register your device on the Harmony web site. The set up is very intuitive for a basic set up. After 15 minutes I was ready to go. Every thing worked great except when I selected "Play DVD" on the activity menu, The TV, DVD player, and the Receiver turned on--but alas no video signal to the TV. I tried screwing around for an hour or so. It is easy to make changes in your setup and then download changes to the remote with the included USB cable. I then resorted to the support line--yes there was a wait, but I was treated nicely and patiently by the support folks. The first person was essentially scripted and when she couldn't get things working she passed me to an intermediate level support. It was 9PM and no I wasn't talking to Bangalore, but a gentleman in Toronto. The problem turned out to be a timing issue with the DVD's HDMI port. The nifty thing is that support can change the settings on their server and you then download the changes to the remote--then walk to the TV and see if they got it right. After some fine tuning it is working well. It is great to put away the five remotes it is replacing. Some of the buttons are small, but the HD DVR remote that replaced the remote for the non-HD DVR had some really crowded tiny buttons. All in all a great remote so far.

4 out of 5 stars Seems like a great remote so far!   October 4, 2007
Purchased the Harmony 720 about a month ago and it's been going great. The only issue i'm run into is the set up. A slip of my pointer during the instillaiton process on my Mac and I said "Yes" that the remote was a Harmony 1000 instead. After repeatedly uninstalling and reinstalling the software to not avail, I finally called Logitech. I could not get the software to recognise my Harmony 720. I could not get the prompt to show up again. Level 1 tech support is very weak. They took me through all the same procedures that i already attempted. They required me to be on phone while on the internet with the controler attached to my computer. This was VERY basic support. After talking to tech support for over an hour, I was finally sent to level 2 support. Only then did they tell me about a file that needed deletion in a configuation file deep in my Mac. That allowed me to say no to the Hamony 1000 question again, and only then did the setup procedure work. Set up went smoothly from there. Selecting components is easy. The battery has a great lifespan. Good reception with the IR. No other issues at all. Once I got past the user error issue, the Harmony 720 works great!!

5 out of 5 stars Not ideal, but easy to use and customize   October 3, 2007
I really like the remote, it is easy to use and higly customizable with software. However there are few things which can be better:

- most commonly used silver buttons center/left/right/up/down (in the center of the remote) are somewhat small and hard to press; at least not as soft/convenient as Menu/Guide and other 8 black buttons right below LCD
- when selecting activity, unit cycles through TV and AV Receiver inputs even if they were already set on the right signal input.
- would like higher resolution of LCD screen
