After one month of recreational use, I recommend the 660. August 3, 2007 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
The 660 does a very nice job of figuring out the best way to get where we're going. The screen is very easy to understand. Voice prompts (including street names) are clear and timely. I was pleasantly surprised that the Garmin knows the difference between getting on a ramp, keeping right, and turning. Selected routes are usually good, although occasionally have to be ignored because of recently completed road projects that provide a better choice. Ability to insert an additional destination as a Via point is also helpful, especially when you just want to find the nearest Sonic to get something to drink. Selecting a destination is quicker and easier than I expected, although I would suggest Garmin offer a user selection to put the keyboard into QWERTY arrangement.
Playback of MP3 files through the car radio works well - voice prompts interrupting as necessary. The Garmin automatically locates a free FM frequency setting, or allows you to choose.
I did have a bit of a problem with the provided suction cup not sticking well to the windshield. I have since mounted the Nuvi to the dashboard. There is a metal disc provided for dashboard mount, but it looked like a one-time permanent mount. Instead, I trimmed a CD cover to size and attached it to the dashboard with velcro tape. The suction cup sticks solidly to the flat plastic and can be easily relocated to our other car.
Almost Perfect August 3, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is my second GPS device, the first being by TomTom (A Go Classic, which is now about 3.5 years old). The screen on my Go Classic was accidentally broken, so I was on the hunt for a replacement. I read several reviews and recommendations and decided that the Garmin Nuvi 660 was the one for me to check out.
I have had the Nuvi 660 now for about 4 weeks and I am glad I bought it. I miss some of the features from my TomTom Go Classic, but the slim screen and other features of the Nuvi (like the very easy to read LCD, the text to speech voice that reads off the streets, etc.) bests the TomTom Go by a mile. But so many times the TomTom had announced that I have arrived at my destination and I was always wondering "WHICH SIDE OF THE STREET IS THE BUILDING ON?". Well the Nuvi tells me exactly which side and I LOVE THAT! Yeah, simple feature, but it can make a difference and maybe even save you a trip around the block!
As I mentioned, the Nuvi 660's LCD screen is easy to see on my windshield, even in the brightest sunlight situations, which is important to me. But what I do miss is the TomTom's ability to ramp up the volume automatically when my speed increases, like getting on the freeway. The Nuvi's volume is on the weak side even at maximum volume (but there is a feature that may help, read on). This makes being able to see the LCD screen that much more important (TomTom's screen looked washed out and very difficult to see in medium bright light conditions on my dash in comparison).
The Nuvi also has many other features. I have started using Points of Interests (POI's) that can be downloaded from Garmin's website. Tell it where you want to go (like a lake, camp ground, maybe even the nearest electronics store to buy another Nuvi 660!) and the Nuvi tells you how many locations in the area and how to get to any of them! I can also connect the Nuvi's sound through my car speakers via the FM transmitter (included with the device). Bluetooth is also available and I can use the Nuvi with my cell phone! Make calls and receive calls through the Nuvi and through the car's speakers too (if configured to do so). The Nuvi also has a better mapping system than the TomTom and the Nuvi has quicker acquisition of the satellites than TomTom.
Why is the Nuvi 660 short of a perfect 5 star? Well like I said, I miss the automatic ramp up in volume feature the TomTom has when your vehicle's speed increases, the TomTom also has more details on the map (the Nuvi's can be adjusted from minimal to maximum, but still has fewer details), and lastly, I tend to favor TomTom's touch screen menus a little better. Small things, and with some time to adjust to them, I'm sure I'll get used to it.
Would I recommend the Nuvi 660? I already have to several people of which several people have purchased them!

I chose Garmin because I had a Garmin GPS for my boat, and found it easy to use. I chose the nuvi line because I wanted a flat GPS that I could easily carry with me. The nuvi 660 meets what I would expect from Garmin. It is incredibly accurrate. I often use it to track my car, and identify approaching roads and intersections. I recently used it to get to a small town that was just east of Washington D.C. The traffic alert function warned me about a 20 minute delay as I neared the beltway, and rerouted me away from the congestion. We never got stuck in traffic thanks to the nuvi 660. Well worth the price.

Awesome - daughter used it day after it arrived to drive from PA to Outer Banks, NC. Directions were perfect. Gave her confidence to make drive. Of course, my kids loaded it with music, and blue-toothed their cell phone to it. Kids like it better than navigation system in my '07 Acura MDX. Amazon price was unbeatable !! Highly recommend !!
