5 out of 5 stars Garmin 660   July 9, 2008
I love this GPS it is very handy and very easy to used will recommended to friend.

2 out of 5 stars Expensive with sub par performance of extra features.   July 9, 2008

I had this for a while now. This unit doesn't live up to my expectations. I had a Magellan Maestro 4040 before and was very much pleased with the Magellan. The options that 4040 lacks is the FM Transmitter, Picture Viewer and Audio player. With these extras and Garmin name comes to about $200 more than the 4040.

The most important thing that nuvi lacks is the "route exclusions" from the list of directions. You can only exclude the current route by using the detour function but not the 3rd or 4th road from the driving directions list.

The FM transmitter is not good at all. My Belkin iPod FM transmitter is much better when connected at the same frequency. Bluetooth connection with phone is good from the internal speaker but drains the battery as with any GPS. As the FM transmitter is bad, Bluetooth connection using FM transmitter and car stereos is worse.

I tried the three month subscription of live traffic using FM receiver which is also the charger for the device. Unfortunately, this shorted the fuse in my car. I bought a bunch of fuses just in case. So far, the charger burnt three of my fuses. I will probably buy a USB charger for charging the GPS than the FM Transmitter charger that I got with the unit.

Bottom line:
Pay for the brand name and extras, which are not worth the extra price.

Pros:
Does the basic GPS functionality pretty good.
Cool features like FM transmitter, picture viewer and MP3 Player.

Cons:
- Higher Price
- FM transmitter is very very noisy.
- Most Important: Doesn't have Route Exclusion.
- Volume out of the box is very low.
- Suction Holder falls off occasionally.
- If Bluetooth on nuvi is enabled and if the cell phone (already paired with nuvi earlier) is connected to a Bluetooth headset instead of nuvi, there is a pop up message, that comes up every 30 seconds occupying the whole screen, saying that the phone is not connected. Gets annoying as it keeps coming until the phone is connected or Bluetooth is disabled.

Places where this can be improved using a software update:
- Implement A2DP Bluetooth stereo profile so that one can stream the stereo sound from cell phone music player to the unit and then to the FM transmitter. May be this one is just v1.1 as Bluetooth 1.2 does support A2DP profile for streaming audio.

- Put Route exclusion in the software.

5 out of 5 stars Garmin Is Great!   July 9, 2008
The Garmin 660 is an excellent product. This is my second Garmin. The 660 tells you the name of the streets you are about to turn on. The 660 also has traffic information. I find this very useful. Overall this is an excellent GPS and the Garmin company gives great service.

We really enjoy this GPS. It's clearly detailed. The voice can be muted if you get sick of the machine voice. Gets you "close" to the area if you don't have a physical address. Have one experience of us getting lost because we were in a remote area and it thought there were roads where they were only plotted!! Got to see a black bear cross the remote road!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Touch-Screen Interface   July 9, 2008

The touch-screen inerface is logical and intuitive. This device is so good that a users manual is not needed. I like the ability to chose an Australian accented male voice prompter to give directions. So far nearly all routes chosen and presented seemed excellent. Its a terrific help in unfamiliar territory. Sometimes it seems to force an Interstate route at the expense of time and distance, but I would trust it to "take me there". I have a built-in navigation system in my car, it cost nearly five times as much as the nuvi 660, but it is "left in the dust" by this excellent unit. Hats off to the Garmin developers who put this on the market!
