Product works great so far. I use it for backing up files off my laptop and storage of music and photographs. This is my first external hard drive, so I am still somewhat nervous about their reliability. Other comments about noise and heat are over exagerated. Yes it is warm to the touch and chirps every once and a while but its still quieter than a DVD drive. This is not something that is meant to be portable but I prefer large capacity thumb drives for the applications I utilize. In my research though I did run into a couple externals that are designed for portability, they're generally way more expensive though. I give it four stars. Holding back on the 5th as it has not yet been a huge amount time since I began using it.

This is a great product for backing up of my computer. I wish I had done a bit more research before I purchased this unit. I had to purchase additional software from another dealer so I could use this hard drive as an automatic back up hard drive. With the software it works great. I can't believe the available space. I lost all of my old data due to my old computer actually burning up. The power supply fried everything in my computer. This will not happen again because of the External Iomega Desktop 500 GB Back up hard drive.
Great device but lacks scheduling usability by itself.

Drive was dead out of box
their mac support is NON EXSISTANT
lost my purchase price for a what is basically now a DOORSTOP

500GB for $100, amazing. This hard drive is fast and quiet. Its a little big, but who cares, it sits under my desk. I used it to back up my digital photos and music, and it works great!
