5 out of 5 stars Meets My Expectations   May 13, 2007

I've had this player for about 4 weeks and like it. Its menus are intuitive, the screen is sharp and the sound quality is great. The FM radio and voice recording feature work fine--a pleasant surprise, since in an older stone-aged player (another brand) that I had, neither feature worked well enough to use.

I've filled the player with nearly 8GB of music and am thoroughly enjoying it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome player, better than ipod.   May 13, 2007

I love this player! The cons are that it is really loud and doesn't get as soft as I like, but that is minor, the buttons are somewhat hard to press but it is not that bad at all. I love this player and use it every day when I wouldn't have otherwise listened to music. I don't use the stock buds as I hate them not staying in my ear, but that is the same with ipod. So, I purchased sennheiser's in the ear kind and they work really well.

The wheel does take getting used to but is not as cheap as it feels and stands up to abuse well. I use WMP 11 and syncing is no problem plus all my playlists transfer over. I love the fact that I can use mp3 and wma and wmp11 instead of stuck with itunes and protected music when I own the CDs. For me it was a clear choice, expensive, hassle ipod or inexpensive less hassle sansa. Apple didn't back up their old product and now they just lost a customer! This player does what it is supposed to and more!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent MP3 player (and cheaper too)!   May 13, 2007

I bouught the SanDisk 8GB a couple of months ago, and I couldn't be happier! I had the iRiver 20GB and it was terrible. The hard drive froze up on a regular basis (I would have to keep a paperclip in my car to reset it). The sound quality may have been a bit better on the iRiver, but in the end, I got no sound out of it.
A cool feature of the SanDisk (maybe IPod has this???) is that it shows the album cover of the tune it's playing; it's also very small. I recommend getting an mp3 player without a hard drive.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not a viable Ipod replacement   May 12, 2007

I bought this to replace an ipod that I lost after 2 years mostly because have never been a big fan of itunes. If you buy something on it, is it ever really yours?, and sometimes itunes is just a little bit too cute. Therefore I wanted a player that could work with a subscription service like Napster.

The Sansa has a lot features and memory for the price. Some of them are great, like the FM radio. Some I have no use for, like the microphone, and some are worse than useless, like the record button, which is so easy to accidentally push during ordinary use, thereby interrupting whatever the player was doing before. I had to tape a nail over the button to avoid pushing it.

In general, the player can do a lot of stuff, but is crude and clumsy and a pale imitation compared to the ipod. Its long battery life is nice, but without buying any adapters, you can only charge it with a USB cord. After transferring files, the player takes several minutes to to "write to device" forcing you to wait. The ipod might take a couple of seconds at most. The wheel is a cheap knockoff of the ipod's touch wheel with none of its elegance and a barely a shadow of its ability. If you have a long file name or title that doesn't entirely fit on the screen, it is painfully slow watching it scroll across the screen. Navigation between and within albums/artists is a slow and multi-step process. If you enjoy podcasts, it is not smart enough to put March further up the playlist than April, or the 3rd above the 10th. For video playback, navigation within the video is almost impossible and rewinding causes the sound and video to un-sync for some reason.

Unless a subscription music service is important you, anything by Apple wins hands down in almost every regard, and if Apple ever makes the ipod more compatible, then owning a Sansa will be utterly pointless. Also, keep in mind that I am comparing today's Sansa with my ipod from 2 years ago. I am sure the ipod has not stood still in that time.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent product   May 12, 2007
This product is great. It has an excellent selection of features on it, ease of use, and is very user-friendly. If there was one down-side I would point out it would be that the FM radio seems a bit weak at times. However, I expect it's based on where you are at the time. It works fine outside, but less good when I'm working (in and around a dairy cooler). Other than that, it's perfect and I'm extremely happy with it.
