Deliver as promised September 17, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased these several months ago for purposes of business travel on planes. These headphones defintely reduce the amount of noise that can be heard on the planes, even when you're not listening to music. When music is on though, you cannot hear even the engines of the planes when you're sitting over or just behind the wings. These headphones have allowed much needed relaxation on long flights, and I would strongly recommend them to anyone doing heavy travel.
Great headphones at a great price! September 17, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am by no means an audiophile so this will not be a technical review of these headphones discussing highs, midtones, or bass. I'm simply someone who wants to listen to my podcasts or music without having to turn the volume up to dangerous levels just to drown out the noise around me.
That being said, in my humble opinion, these are fantastic headphones. I've tried (in store) both models of the Bose Quiet Comfort headphones as well as the Beats by Dr. Dre and I think the Audio-Technicas easily compete with all of them, yet at a fraction of the price. The Bose and Beats are well over $300 and yes they're nice but much of that price is Name Brand related. I've been using the Audio-Technicas and they sound beautiful, they're comfortable, noise cancellation is very effective, build quality is very nice and, at the time of this review, they're selling for $109 which means you can buy 3 for the price of one of the competitors.
Fantastic headphones, but mind the smell! September 16, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Well, what can I say about the Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7 headphones that hasn't been noted by hundreds of other reviewers? Simply put, these headphones are absolutely amazing. (In fact, I'm wearing right now!) I purchased these headphones about a month ago for my trip to Japan after reading numerous reviews praising the noise-canceling cans. I, like many of you potential buyers, was weighing the pros and cons of these headphones and the Bose Quietcomfort 2. Over the short period of time that I have owned these, I can still say that I am so happy that I went with the Audio-Technicas. Here is a brief overview of my experience with them:
While first impressions are always the most important ones, my "introduction" to my Audio-Technicas was a rather pungent affair. When I opened the packaging, I was nearly knocked over by an overwhelming burnt rubber smell that radiated from the headphones sturdy case. I guess some might call it the sweet brand-spanking new, straight from the factory, headphones smell, but at the time, I just called it just plain nauseating. Just one whiff of my new headphones practically caused me to pass out, and I was going to wear these on a plane for 14 hours? Ugh, I hoped my aisle mates either had strong stomachs or no noses. Now, most of the smell started to dissipate after a few days of airing out, but even after a month of moderate use, the headphones still exude a bit of funkiness. However, I began to overlook its odorous nature the moment I put these babies on.
Now, I am no expert on the average size range of human heads and ears, but these guys fit me like a glove! Snug, comfortable and seemingly well constructed, I was beginning to forgive the ATH-ANC7s for their tire factory smell. I popped a AAA battery in (an included Energizer) and flipped the noise-canceling switch on the left can. Silence...Well, almost. As you probably read from numerous articles on noise-canceling headphones, nothing on the market today offers 100% silence. After having to endure screaming plane babies and a snoring father, I can confirm that these headphones will not block out 100% of intermittent sounds, but it will greatly reduce them, particularly if you have an iPod or DVD going at a reasonable volume level. And this brings me to my next point, noise leakage.
Simply put, the noise leakage on these things are just terrible, particularly when the noise-canceling switch is in the "on" position. While this might not matter on a noisy plane, it is really noticeable in a moderately quiet office and unbearable in a silent library. You know those morons who listen to their iPods so loudly on the train that you get to endure their embarrassingly bad taste in music? Now imagine being that guy without intentionally trying to be that guy. Even while listening to your music on the softest level, you will still manage to get dirty looks. Well, you are pretty much guaranteed that future with these puppies. Read other reviews and you'll get the idea.
Well, despite the aforementioned flaws, I'm still happy with these guys. The price truly cannot be beat in comparison to the Quietcomforts. All in all, if you want a nice, cheaper alternative to the Bose headphones, go with these. They may not perfect, but I love them regardless.
Ready for Travel September 13, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
On my last long flight from Hawaii, I could not hear the audio of the movies on the earphones they gave me. There was alot of noise (hum in the background) the entire flight. I ordered these headphones because of the LOW price as compared to Bose(which I intended to order). When they arrived I immediately tried them out with the TV blarring in the background! I tried them both with and without the noise cancelling feature and found them to be just what I needed. I am very pleased with my decision and purchase.
best all around headphones for air travel September 13, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
For long haul air travel, these are the best noise cancelling headphones I have found. Better than Bose, Sennheiser, etc. Not better sound, but better combination of useability and sound. Here's why:
1) Sound quality is good enough. Nice highs and lows, and sound cancelling works fine.
2) Unlike the Bose QC3, uses 1 AAA battery, not a proprietary rechargeable battery. Much easier to deal with replacing a AAA on the road than remembering to recharge the Bose battery.
3) If the battery dies, headphones still work (just without noise cancelling). Most other noise cancelling headphones do not function at all with a dead battery.
4) The headphone case has extra room in it and fits an ipod no problem. With the Bose case, ipod can only fit in pocket on back- much less protection.
5) Comfort- over the ear design is much more comfortable on long flights than on ear headphones.
6) Price- makes the decision that much eaiser. Much cheaper than the other high-end headphones
7) Quality- mine have held up well and seem to be very well constructed. Even the headphone wire seems to be heavier gauge than other brands.
Overall, very pleased with these headphones.
