Easy to use, does what it needs to July 21, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
After reading R. Epstein's bad review I had second thoughts but am very glad I didn't let it keep me from ordering the Garmin. It is the first GPS I have owned/used and I couldn't be happier with it. The first trip I used it on was a trip from Salt Lake, Utah to Syracuse, NY. Following directions could not have been easier! (I actually forgot to take my maps and my AAA triptix so I had to completely rely on the GPS) The interface is VERY intuitive. I love you can use it to find restaurants, gas, parks, hotels, hospitals. It is kind of like carrying a phone-book for every town you travel through. I had a tire blow out in Lincoln Nebraska and I used it to find a local Firestone tire store. I won't be taking any long trips without it.
Excellent ! July 20, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Have owned it for more than a month now, and I just love it. Giving it 4 stars, instead of 5, coz there are still a few things that could be improved upon. Having said that, I just love this unit, and am glad that I shelled out a few extra bucks to get this one (even though there were cheaper models that I could have gone for).
Pros - - Wide screen - Most of the times detects satellite really quickly. I have owned nuvi 350 before this, and I can see the difference. - Very easy to set up. - for me, the qwerty keyboard is very useful.
Cons- - On rare occasions, it would take minutes to detect satellites. It's happened a couple of times only since I bought it. - If you turn on the FM receiver, you lose the text-to-speech functionality. Essentially, it's on mute.
Worse than the 660 July 20, 2008 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I've used both the 660/650 and 760/750 and IMO Garmin has been cutting corners developing the 7XX. The 660 is superior to the 760 because:
- 660 comes with more accessories like case and AC adapter - GPS receiver not as sensitive as the 660. The 660 would literally take 5 secs to get a fix, while the 760 usually ranges from 5 secs to 5 minutes. It's not very consistent - Really poor speaker compared to the 6XX series. Garmin really cheapened out putting such a poor sounding speaker in the 7XX series. - The 760 freezes around once a week! Usually it happens when I search for a POI, enter an address or try to add a new route under multirouting. The 660/650 that I've had NEVER froze during the 1 year that I used them - BAD routing. This is really the deal breaker for me. I've used both the 2008 and 2009 maps and the 760 gives me really bad routes sometimes here in LA. The 660 gives much more efficient routes. It sounds crazy, but its true. - BT interface is well done, but the sound quality of the speaker is horrible, so its almost impossible to understand the other party.
I really wanted to like the 760 as it has nicer graphics, multirouting, QWERTY, and history of cities. However, I plan to return my 760 and get a 650 instead.
Excellent..even better at the Amazon price. July 20, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Excellent gps unit.... my only complaint is the "tinny" sound and the lack of a signal beep as you approach a turn. The features of the 760 are as described and function well... although I've only had my unit for the last 2 days. I'm not too sure whether I'll subscibe to the traffic feature after the 3 month trial subscription expires... but I'll give it a few weeks of use to see if the subscription is worth it. I'm using the supplied dashboard mount. It seems to be well secured to the dashboard. I don't think I'll need the windshield mount. I did have to upgrade the software. When I registered the unit on the Garmin webpage, it offered a free upgrade to the 2009 version of the map software. It takes a good hour or two to do the upgrade using the Garmin web updater program that is free to download. I was quite suprised to find that the brightness of the display is excellent, even in bright sunshine. All in all this gps is really quite good and very easy to use... I highly recommend it. I've noticed that the Amazon price varies from day to day (hour to hour?), but still the price I paid beat Best Buy and Circuit City (both were selling it at $599 plus tax)... I was able to catch the Amazon price of $342... quite a deal considering the free shipping option and no sales tax (I did opt for the 2nd day delivery for $6.95...would you believe that the unit was delivered the day after I ordered it!)
Excellent navigator July 18, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I have just moved to a new city and this unit has been invaluable. Having it speak the names of the streets is a very worthwhile plus. The maps seem to be up to date in urban areas although there are some gaps in eastern Canada. Even in these cases it "does its best" which is pretty good. I found the "find lodging" function useful while travelling but using the unit to play music through the car stereo can present a problem since it is often difficult to find sustained "blank space" on the FM dial especially while travelling any distance as the nuvi is "stepped on" by local stations.
