3 out of 5 stars Too Expensive For What You Get. Convenient, Clear Picture, but No Image Stabilization & Uploading Probs   December 30, 2007
14 out of 19 found this review helpful

I received this for Christmas from my wife.
First of all the pluses. As advertised and on several reviews, this is an extremely easy video camera to use. Probably the easiest out there. It is compact enough to fit in your pocket, and the picture is clear with adequate sound. I found it easy to download on to my computer 8 out of 10 times. The other two times, the recording wouldn't download no matter what I tried.

Now for the cons. I was disappointed by the shakey image. I have used several cameras all with steady pictures. I tried to keep my hand steady, but could only get a stable picture when I used my second hand. For me, this really detracted from what I was shooting. The whole time I was watching the video, I was distracted by the instability of the image.

This camera is great for teenagers or adults shooting videos for "You-Tube", but not very good if you want to capture memories. In my opinion, this camera is too expensive for what you get. I also don't like being limited to an internal flash card. If something goes wrong with the card, the camera is shot. I think they really need to look at having an expansion SD card port.

I purchased a Vupoint dv-da1-vp as a replacement. It was the same price, but has several additional features. The video quality is better, and the size is exactly the same as the Flip Ultra. MOST IMPORTANTLY, IT HAS IMAGE STABILIZATION!! The videos of my kids don't make me seasick anymore! The creators of the Flip Ultra should look at this camera and try to duplicate. It has a place for an expansion SD card, an MP3 player, a 5.0 MP camera, a larger viewing screen, built in lens cap, better sound than the flip camera, a voice recorder, and you can record TV or movies on it to be viewed later. This camera is slightly more complicated to work than the Flip Ultra, but only takes about 30 minutes to learn.

Bottom line: If you are looking for simplicity, pick the Flip Ultra. If you are looking for a better quality pocket-sized video camera at the same price, look at the Vupoint dv-da1-vp.

4 out of 5 stars No better camcorder for under $200   December 30, 2007

This camera is perfect for the on the go person who likes to save memories. If you purchase this product with the expectations that this will be your end all be all of cameras you will be disappointed. If you purchase it for a CONVENENT and EASY way to save memories, it is perfect! What I particularly like about the camera is that it doesn't look like a camcorder. Most people don't even realized they're being recorded! Such a good gift!

5 out of 5 stars Great device for the amateur   December 30, 2007

The whole concept of Flip Video is simplicity. Open the box, drop in the included (regular) batteries, shoot, review, download, done! The camera works great!! If you're looking to become the next Spielberg, or you want to film an 8-hour epic that you plan on boring your family and friends with, this camera is NOT for you. But if you want a fun and easy to use device that fits in your pocket, you'll love this. The video quality is very good and makes great videos in a normally lit room, with no need for one of those spotlights that blind the subject. You also have the option of saving still pictures from your videos, and picture quality is good. Emailing your videos is also easy. There is no software disk or manual needed. Cables are even included so you can watch them on your TV. Even the product registration is simple. All you do is send an email to the company with your particulars and it's done. No surveys and boxes to click and unclick.

I use a MacBook, and I did experience some downloading issues initially. But Flip technical support is superb! I received a response and solution to my problem within hours of sending an email.

I rated this highly because of the simplicity, quality, fun factor and excellent technical support. If this is what you want, get a Flip. If you plan on filming the next Hollywood blockbuster, spend big bucks on another, expensive alternative.

1 out of 5 stars Frustrated   December 30, 2007

I bought this as a gift for my daughter. We played videos through our TV and were very impressed with the quality. The problems started when I tried to connect it our home computer, a Dell desktop running Windows XP. It wouls attached to a USB port and the camera's screen would light up saying connected but the computer would not recognize it. I tried several ports and got the same result. I e-mailed support, got a response and followed the directions but still nothing. I tried connecting the camera to my office laptop, a Gateway also running Windows XP. It recognized it, although it caused an external hard drive to crash. While I had it connected I downloaded the upgraded recommended by tech support hoping that would do the trick on our desktop. Still nothing.

Needless to say I am very frustrated and my daughter is very disappointed. It looks like I need to return it to the place of purchase. But the problem remians, what about my daughter? The appeal of the Flip was its simplicity. To me simple is NOT spending over 2 1/2 hours trynig to get it to work properly and failing.

Depending on your computer, be prepared to feel the same way.

.
This is a delightful camera to own... so much fun. My little pals (9 & 7) love to take movies and pictures with it; soon the two-year-olds will do so as well.

I now find that I am actually part of the family, since I'm not the one behind the camera all the time.

It is simple to use, easy to transfer data, and fun, fun, fun!

I have had no problems at all in the four months I've owned the camera, and highly recommend it -- especially at this reduced price!

Have a lot of fun!
