4 out of 5 stars remote works well but the setup process is tedious   August 17, 2008
The Harmony One form factor seems pretty well designed. The layout of the touchscreen and the physical buttons works well and the remote feels solid in your hands. The touchscreen has excellent resolution and contrast and feels responsive enough. And the charging dock means you never have to deal with batteries again.

Where the Harmony One falls short is in the configuration process. You can only configure the remote over USB using your computer (Mac or Windows) along with the Harmony application. The initial setup isn't too bad, it will walk you through adding your devices (by model and manufacture) and organizing things into activities. This worked well for my TV, DVD, and receiver but it seemed to get the wrong IR codes for my other devices (like PVR) so I had to do these manually.

The most frustrating thing is how long it takes to update the remote to test out a change. Even if you just want to change one button, you have to wait 5-10 minutes for the remote to reprogram. Then you disconnect USB, try the command, find out it doesn't work, reconnect USB, and go through the configuration process again. Forget about experimenting, once it's "good enough" you're not going to want to change things unless you have to.

A few other gripes about the Harmony software:
- It detected all of the possible codes for my receiver and laid them out as buttons on the touchscreen (good) but the ordering seemed completely random (e.g. I had to flip through 6 pages to locate the command to manually power on/off)
- Rearranging buttons between pages is a huge pain (delete and re-add)
- There is no way to create groups of related commands (e.g. volume controls, playback controls, picture, etc.)
- There is no way to change the size of buttons or customize the icons
- The software requires you to be logged in to your Harmony account every time

The Harmony One has replaced my 6 remotes with just one and that is saying a lot. Apart from the software issues, as a day-to-day remote it mostly "just works". Guests can now watch a DVD without needing a 5-minute lecture and everything can be powered down with a single button press.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic product !!   August 15, 2008
I'm a 62 yr old great-grandmother, with a reasonable, but by no means expert, knowledge of computers and electronic equipment. I purchased the Harmony One Universal Remote yesterday from Best Buy. I buy tons of stuff from Amazon, but was in a bit of a hurry to get this up and going.

I have a not too complicated Home Theater setup: a 50" LG Plasma TV, Sony DVD/VHS combo, Sony AV Receiver, and Sony 5-disc CD changer, and an HD Motorola ATT U-Verse receiver . Up until today, I (and worse, my grandchildren) had to use a minimum of 3 remotes to simply watch a DVD (TV, DVD player, and AV sound), etc.

I had absolutely no problems getting this remote setup and working with ALL of my equipment. The software instructions were excellent. Until this remote, I did not have a remote, except the original "commander", that would work well with the DVD/VHS combo player. The only two problems that I've incurred are not the Harmony's fault. Several years ago I'd purchased a fairly expensive (at that time) Sony Universal remote and to get it to work with the AV Receiver, I either had to or accidently set the AV Receiver's remote function to a second option (not the factory default). It worked well with the Sony Universal but would not work thereafter with the original "commander". In order to get the Harmony One to work with the AV Receiver, I had to reset the set's function back to the factory default. The second problem I'm experiencing is that all but one of my components appear to have fairly strong IR signal acceptance. The DVD/VHS combo does not. So I have to be pretty accurate in aiming the Harmony One at that component when I'm turning it on or off. Otherwise, the other components respond, but the DVD/VHS combo doesn't.

All in all, I'm thrilled at last to finally have only one remote to control everything. The display is well laid out (and customizable) for anyone to understand and use. All appropriate components turn on or off with the press of one on-screen button. I had been debating getting one of the Harmony models for about 6 months. I'm glad I waited for the Harmony One Advanced to come out.

Great job Logitech !!!

4 out of 5 stars Great universal remote but...   August 15, 2008
I've owned a couple of universal remotes and this one is my favorite but usually new toys are. I like the feel and the use of this remote and I agree with the other comments I've read that yes the wife and family members can use it too with no difficulties.
My only complaint was the time it required to setup the Direct TV HD-DVR remote and the dvr functions. They did not setup automatically and i had to configure most of the buttons and use the learn feature. I figured if i had the code for the device everything would work and i was wrong.
But after I got past this hurdle it's been a breeze.
The only other comment is the battery life. The previous remote by Phillips Pronto, the battery lasted much longer than this one. I'm recharging about once a week and maybe that's because we are heavy dvr users and like to fast forward through commercials but i would have liked the battery to last a bit longer.
But other than those two comments, i like the remote very much and would recommend it to others.

5 out of 5 stars Best remote ever with one small flaw   August 14, 2008
The Harmony One remote is by far their best remote to date. This is my 4th harmony remote in the past 5 years...I always update because I love them so much.

The biggest improvement is the raised buttons. They're great and you know right where you're at without having to look at the remote. Buttons are very responsive too. The layout is MUCH improved for us DVR fans too. It just makes more sense.

I love the touch screen. It's a great addition. Being able to put the icons of your favorite stations is really neat too. Especially for those visitors that want to know what channel X station is on - now they can look at the icons and hit the one they want. It only has enough storage for 24 favorites, but that's plenty in my book. The only flaw in the Harmony One lies in the touch screen. There is no way to toggle it off so when you are watching TV and the remote slips to your side and you move you will accidently activate that screen. It's VERY touch sensitive. That is the only flaw....and not even worthy of knocking a star off.

The programing is amazing!! I absolutely love the online interface and it will have everything you need. And if for some reason you are the first to get a new component, it's SO easy to teach commands.

This remote is for anyone that has more than one AV device they are trying to control. It takes the complexity out of remotes and TRULY replaces all your current remotes. I would not hesitate to hit the purchase button!
