 Works Perfectly July 4, 2008
After doing some investigation, I decided to buy this external hard drive... It works really nicely, I am really putting it to the test and it has not failed once... it is fast, noise-less, beautiful... all you need is a 2.0 USB port... don't install the software, its useless.

I bought this Toshiba 160GB portable hard drive from Amazon. My Dell Inspiron 1405 laptop was not able to power it. The hard drive would show up in 'My Computer" for a second, and then disappear. However, the drive worked fine with my Dell Optiplex desktop. Someone suggested to use a power booster Y cable (USB cable with 2 male and 1 female connectors). I bought a Y cable, but that could not solve my problem. My laptop can now power it for a few minutes. My earlier Seagate 80GB hard drive worked well on the same laptop perfectly on one USB port. Apparently, this Toshiba 160 GB needs more power than that is available in 2 USB ports on an Inspiron laptop.
I am disappointed.

I very much enjoy my new Toshiba 160 HDD, this thing is so fast and at such an affordable price for me. I've never had a portable hard drive before though I have seen many people with them I always wanted one. I'm very happy with what I purchased.

For the price, this is THE external hard drive. It works beautifully, is compact, and makes not a single noise. I backed up over 1,000 songs, 200 pictures and about 15 movie files and still have nearly 80% free space. I've heard of some issues with gaming systems, but no problems whatsoever syncing it with my toshiba notebook.
