Very Poor Performer May 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I hooked this up and the data transmission rate is extremely low. I have a rather small house and not many electrical circuits. I tried it on several different outlets, with the same results.
A great solution for a lazy father May 8, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
After many complaints from my teenaged son, I finally decided it was time to give him a wired network connection. The poor wifi reception in his upstairs bedroom was affecting his WoW gameplay! If that had been the only reason, I probably would have continued to procrastinate, but I had decided that wifi reception was also affecting my Xbox 360 performance. It was time to do something!
I thought about switching to an 802.11n router, but wasn't too thrilled about having to buy new network adapters for my laptops and other devices (assuming I could find one for the Xbox). The next idea was running ethernet cable through the house. I did some research, and it looked like I could wire up the desired locations for about $150 in cable and tools. The downside was the amount of time it was going to take to run cable through the crawl space, and up through the walls. Plus, if I changed the location of the Xbox, I would have to do it again.
I had looked at powerline networking in the past, but the price seemed high, and user reviews were spotty. Before I ordered my cable, I decided to take one more look at powerline adapters here on Amazon. That's when I came across the Panasonic BL-PA100. The price was certainly right - I could get 4 adapters for about $100. I would have the flexibility to move them around, and the user reviews were generally positive. I wasn't worried about some reviewers' concerns about high-def performance - as long as they could match wifi performance I thought my gaming needs would be satisfied. I only needed 3 adapters, but I figured I would probably end up using a 4th if I had it. I ordered 2 kits of 2, and waited for delivery.
My order was shipped promptly, and arrived within a week. I was a little surprised by how small the box was, thinking that they must have only sent me one kit, instead of two. Nope - these things are small. I opened the first box, glanced over the instructions, and plugged my 'master' adapter into my router. A quick trip upstairs, and 2 minutes later my son's PC had a solid network connection for the first time in months. Now for the Xbox! The kit is shipped with one device configured as a master, and the other as a terminal. Since I wanted to use 2 terminals with one master, I would need to configure adapters 3 and 4 to work with the master I had already set up. That took all of 5 minutes, following the very clear instructions provided in the manual. A couple more minutes of unplugging and plugging, and my Xbox also had a good connection to my router.
Since then, I have not even thought about the devices. The master and both terminals work flawlessly, despite being on different circuits, connected at the house's fuse panel. The design is great, since the use of a power cord means you don't lose access to the other socket the way you may with competitive products that plug directly into the socket. This product saved me a lot of time and effort, and was well worth the price. Highly recommended.
Simply works May 7, 2008 I installed this product to connect a PC in an isolated part of the house to the network. Previously the PC connected via 802.11g but could not attain more than a minimal connection and would often drop the signal. This product worked right out of the box and has maintained a 42mps connection; more than fast enough for the PC.
This is a great item May 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased to link my desktop computer in my home office on the front of the house on the first floor to my router on the second floor toward the middle of the house. I have my router on the second floor as it is where all the activities are. All the bedrooms as well as the game room where I connect a mac mini to my HDTV are hard-wired to the router. By the way, this is a 2-year-old home, and my home office is very close to the circuit breaker but where the router is is not. The signal on my Wireless-G card is good when it is connected, but it has to constantly search for the wireless signal. I was hesitant to purchase this unit as it is proprietary, but I found out that I can easily order a second unit so that's not a big deal. Purchasing it with AMEX Blue with their Buyer Protection Program gave me a piece of mind.
The two units are identical, with one designated as slave (the switch is on slave) and one as a master (switch is on master) though you can easily reverse the role. The slave unit was pre-registered to the master unit, and my computer connected to the router upon plugging the master into the power outlet, hooking up the LAN cable to the router, plugging the slave unit into a wall outlet, and connecting the LAN cable to the computer. No other configuration - software, firmware, or hardwave - is required, which is a great plus. I have experienced no drop in connection at all for the last few weeks I have connected. I definitely recommend this unit. For $40.98 with free shipping (May 2008), it is about twice as expensive as a good deal on a Wireless-G card [...] but the ease of connection is well worth it.
Great little product April 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have not used this for all of the things that others have mentioned (streaming HD content from computer, etc). My main purpose was to give a connection for my xbox 360 - and it has done that with a vengeance. Connection was incredibly simple. I received two units - set one to "master", and plugged it in to the wall, and connected it to my router. Left the other unit on "terminal" setting, plugged it in to wall by the 360, and connected it to the 360. Worked instantly, no additional setup required. I have a 10 MBPS cable connection at home, so I know downloads will be limited by that. Having said that, I downloaded a 28 MB trailer on my 360, and it polished it off in right around one minute (which is very close to the same performance I get from my computer connection). So I am very happy with speed and performance. One little ding - it did not come with ethernet/patch cable, so I had to use my own. But it's so much cheaper than the others I looked at, I could have bought several extra cables & still come out ahead. All in all, highly recommend (though, of course, as mentioned above, I'm not using it for all of the things some others are, so be sure to check out capability for what you are looking to do)...
