4 out of 5 stars small size makes it ideal for new, niche uses   June 26, 2004

EDITED: After one year of use, my earlier claims were overly optimistic. The hardware seems good, as far as it goes, but the software is ridiculously buggy and unreliable.
------------------------------
First--this is not a flatbed scanner; so keep one handy. This is not a high-speed sheetfed either; don't try to use it for those purposes and things work out well. SOMETIMES.

Ideal for portable scanning--the kind of scanning where you go into a library, or an office, or other location. Use it as a fax replacement for printed docs, as an alternative to photocopying and carrying, as a convenient device for sorting and recording receipts, bills, and what-not while traveling on the go, and it works great.

Many earlier gripes compared this scanner to very different products--or simply slammed it for lack of support. (Concur: the support sucks, the downloads don't work - and reinstalling drivers adds SPYWARE - that BMupdate.exe is ugly).

The interface seems intermittent (REVISED: TOTALLY UNRELIABLE): sometimes, I have to unplug/replug the scanner after a particularly long job, and it seems pretty random. That slows things down, but isn't a fatal flaw.

Still, for real estate, student, legal, design, and other niches, this scanner is ideal. Don't like it for it's portability? Try lugging a flatbed or fullsize sheetfed + power supply to the library!

1 out of 5 stars I'm a disbeliever now too   May 28, 2004

I read the previous reviews, didn't believe it, and now have a non-functioning scanner. Buy something else.

5 out of 5 stars 0 footprint. Great speed. Great product.   March 1, 2004

Software support was bad for thier older models, but even still for less than $20 I was able to obtain a current copy of Paperport for my MX scanners at work, and still use four at work.

XP strobe takes less tinkering, but the simplest searches on Google will solve any problems you have.

Seriously you will not find a scanner that is faster without destroying your entire deskspace. These scanners even curve your paper back out at you. For light scanning of important documents, nothing beats the strobes.

1 out of 5 stars Suggest avoiding Visioneer Stobe scanners   February 27, 2004

Like other reviewers, I have used several of the older Visioneer scanners, and really liked the monochrome MX model. Unfortunately, Visioneer would not upgrade the software to support it on Windows 2000 and XP operating systems. My last (and I really mean the last) Visioneer procuct was the Strobe Pro, which worked for a time on my Windows 2000 machine, but eventually stopped when operating system upgrades were installed. Product support is nearly nonexistent. Moreover, the Strobe scanners are not TWAIN compliant, so if it doesn't work with the supplied software, it won't work with anything. If you're lucky, the XP 100 will work for you, at least for a while. But if it doesn't and you need support, you'll find you're out of luck.

1 out of 5 stars Not good   December 24, 2003

I have had a succession of Visioneer scanners, and each one has been more of a struggle than anything else. My XP 100 worked OK at first, but if I didn't use it for a while, it would lose its USB connection. Reinstalling everything seemed to be the only way to fix it. Then after 13 months (the warranty is one year), it lost its connection and won't work no matter what I tried. Tech support confirmed that it was dead but after the warranty expires Visioneer won't fix it. You have to trade it in for 25% off another scanner. Well, I am not getting another Visioneer scanner even for 75% off.
