Lost, no more!! January 4, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
What a great addition to our family. Worth the money... by the way, Amazon has the best price anywhere. Only downfall, battery life is short. I recommend running system off the car charger while using.
Outstanding and easy to use January 4, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
The Nuvi 350, while a little on the pricey-side, is well worth the investment. This GPS, while diminutive in stature, is grandiose in features; some of which I never thought I'd use, yet do. I never thought I'd use the "audio book" function, but it really is nice to listen to a book on long trips. While the speaker is a bit small, and therefore not rich sounding, it is adequate, but just barely. To help hear it better I simply plug the Nuvi in to my FM modulator that was designed for an MP3 player. I then hear the book via my car's stereo.
The screen is bright, clear, and easy to use. The touch screen works flawlessly and the voice prompts are timely and concise. The Nuvi is smart enough to prompt you based upon your speed. On the highway it gives plenty of warning about changes in course (about a mile or so at freeway speeds) and yet gives less time for around town driving because it knows speeds are lower. Really nice.
The receiver is very sensitive, locks on quickly and keeps it locked even sitting in my garage. Rarely, if ever, does it lose the "birds". The only time I can remember was in an underground parking garage in San Francisco. The loss of the satellites was to be expected in the concrete and steel garage, and who needs a GPS in a parking garage?
I use my Nuvi almost exclusively via the supplied power cord. The battery lasted about 6 hours on a road trip without the cord with the brightness set to about 60%. If I have any concern it is about battery replacement. Since I have yet to crack the case open I do not know how involved of a process this is. There isn't a "remove cover to access battery" on the Nuvi. This is probably a no-brainer, and my Nuvi does not need a new battery, but it will someday.
The dash-disk and suction cup mount is easy to use and removal/installation of the Nuvi is a simple button-press/click. Even the power cord is integral to the mount, so one doesn't have to unplug and then dismount the device every time you park in a public place. Press the thumb button, tilt it forward and it releases smoothly. Reverse the process to install. It doesn't get any easier.
The freely-available POI loaders work well and the Nuvi loads custom made Points of Interest without a hassle. This makes trip planning a snap. I had many mountain-top radio sites saved in my older GPSs and a POI loader made entering them into the Nuvi very easy.
In typical Garmin fashion, bugs in the firmware are fixed on a regular basis, although I hadn't encountered any. Garmin has a "Web Updater" service that checks their updates against your model of GPS and notifies you if there are any updates or upgrades available.
I've owned a dozen or so GPSs since the mid-90s. Some have been simple hockey-puck receivers with no display, others have had rudimentary dot-matrix display or basic black-on-white graphics. The Nuvi is the first full color display model I've owned and I am very happy with it. My only regret? If I had waited just a little bit I could have bought the Nuvi 660 with it's even bigger, wide-screen display. The 350 is big enough as it is, but the 660 would be like trading a standard TV screen for a wide screen model. Both work well, one is just a different aspect ratio. Maybe I'll have to add the 660 to my Amazon wish list?
The BEST Gps, and a company that stands behind the product. January 4, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Purchased this GPS several months ago, and have used it extensively since then. Not only will it get you to where you are going...within several feet..but the best part is the search for a named business. Ever been on the highway...jonesin' for a Starbucks??...but have no idea where one is? Type in Starbucks, and this unit lists all of the known coffee joints within 50 miles ( and thats alot of starbucks!!) Have not tried the MP3, or picture viewer yet...but thats not why I bought it. So satisfied, that I bought 3 more for family and friends.
Had an initial glitch...the car charge cord kept blowing fuses...by the time Garmin shipped out a new cord (for free), the unit fried! Shipped the entire unit back to Garmin, and within a week, received a brand new unit....no questions asked. THAT IS GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE!! The way this unit works, with the support of the parent company is why I will always buy a GARMIN!
Nuvi 350 Review January 4, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This unit is great. The size of the screen is perfect for someone like me who wears glasses with bifocals and the brightness and sound quality is right on. Being able to run the unit on battery, battery life advertised as 8 hrs, is a plus if you don't want to keep plugging the unit into you cigarette lighter. And being able to fit the unit into your pocket when you park is a great feature. The windshield mount works perfectly, the Nuvi is easliy installed and removed and the mount adheres to the glass and detaches easily. I'm still exploring the features, but the neat thing is that at night you can concentrate on driving and not worry about looking for street signs, they are announced enough in advance and multiple times so you have plenty of notice when to turn. If you miss a turn the unit recalculates a new route quickly and gets you right back on track. I found the routing to be very accurate. The format for the data compiled at the end of the trip is visually pleasing and is displayed as a dashboard with the trips max speed, average speed, distance etc. easily readable. Planning and saving routes is very simple and the unit is very user friendly right out of the box. I was up and running in about 20 minutes. All the new electronic gadgets should be this easy to use. I know this sounds like a commercial, but if you are in the market for a GPS that works as advertised, is easy to use, accurate and very portable, the Nuvi is the way to go. Hope this gives you enough info to make an educated purchase. Thanks and good luck.
Gamin Nuvi 350 January 3, 2007 I must say that I love this little guy. My girlfriend got this for me for Christmas and we used it exclusively to get from Boston to Sugarloaf Ski resort in Maine. It was awesome. We never got lost and when I made a wrong turn, because I wasn't paying attention, it quickly got us back on track. I've seen some others talk about POI's not being up to date. We ran into that as well one night while we were trying to get somewhere. However, the next day I went to [...] site and they have a free webupdater program here: [...] that allows you to update your firmware, software, and add somethings to your unit. On our way back to that same area the next day, everything showed up. So, for all of you that haven't gone to [...] site, I suggest you do and update your Nuvi. It'll also add a couple of new features and it seems to operate a littel more quickly too. Battery life was a little dissapointing when the screen was left on the entire time, however, you can have th screen dim down after a minute and it will light up again when you approach a turn or POI. Anytime the unit speaks, it will light up...I prefer the Australian accent myself. :) With it's small size, think 2000 cell phone, it fits in my pocket, I can mount it to a motorcycle or my bicycle, and it has a setting so that you can tell the unit you're on one of those. Not much I can complain about. I test software/hardware for a living and so far I haven't found anything wrong with this guy. I highly recommend it!
